Women's Basketball Falls In Exhibition Opener At Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad played its lone exhibition game of the pre-season on Monday evening at Michigan State with the Spartans prevailing 101-40.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors started slowly on offense missing their first 10 field goal attempts (including five from beyond the arc), while also comitting five turnovers.  ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford) ended the 6:25 drought with a field goal that snapped a 21-0 run by MSU.  WSU trailed 30-2 after 10 minutes concluding the period by missing its final five field goal attempts.

Second Quarter
A Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) jumper on WSU's first possession of the second period would be the only field goal for the Warriors in the stanza as Wayne State misfired on its final 18 shots before intermission.  McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) split a pair from the charity stripe for WSU's other point.

The Warriors made 2-of-35 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes, while MSU shot 74 percent (23-of-31).  The turnovers were nearly even with eight for Wayne State and seven for Michigan State.

Third Quarter
WSU had a solid third period as MSU out-scored the visitors 23-16.  Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) tallied eight points, while Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich.) chipped in with a pair of field goals in the final two minutes of the stanza.

Fourth Quarter
The final period was nearly even with MSU having a 20-19 scoring advantage.  Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) led the Warriors with eight points in the final 10 minutes, including two triples.  Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich.) contributed a pair of field goals.

TEAM STATS
Michigan State shot 65 percent from the floor (40-of-62) compared to WSU's 25 percent (17-of-68).  MSU made five of its 13 triple tries (39 percent), while the Warriors were 3-of-22 (14 percent).  The Spartans made 64 percent (16-of-25) of their free throws, with Wayne State only attempting five foul shots.  Michigan State had 19 turnovers to WSU's 17.  MSU held a 49-31 edge in rebounding.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp was the lone WSU player in double figures with 10 points.  She also added a team-best seven assists.  Lutchka registered eight points with Miller tallying six points.  Miller and Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) tied for team-high rebounding honors with five boards apiece.

LEADING THE SPARTANS
Grace VanSlooten and Theryn Hallock led six MSU players in double figures with a game-best 16 points each.

WARRIOR TIDBIT
The game featured an Ayrault family reunion.  Julia dished out a game-high eight assists for the Spartans, while WSU's Annabel drained a fourth quarter triple.  Father Andy is an assistant coach for Wayne State.
