Women's Basketball Leads Wire-To-Wire In 73-64 Win Over Northwood

Both Tripp and Thompson notch double-doubles.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (1-2 overall) led wire-to-wire in defeating visiting Northwood University (1-2 overall) 73-64 Thursday evening at the WSU Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a pair of lay-ups by junior Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  Following a bucket by NU, sophomore guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) and freshman guard Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start) each made baskets for an 8-2 advantage.  After two foul shots by the Timberwolves, Sylvester had a steal and lay-up, and Ferguson drained a triple prompting a Northwood timeout as WSU led 13-4.

NU answered a Thompson jumper with the final four points on the opening stanza but Wayne State still led 15-8 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
Northwood's Maeve St. John started the second period scoring with a triple, but lay-ups by Sylvester and Thompson were sandwiched around a long-range shot by NU's Maddie Voelker which pulled the guests within three at 17-14.  Thompson and Voelker exchanged lay-ups before senior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) tallied the next six points for a 25-16 lead.

Following a lay-up by St. John, Tripp connected from beyond the arc pushing the lead to 10 (28-18) with 5:50 remaining before intermission.  A 9-2 run by Wayne State gave the hosts its largest lead of the contest (17 points, 37-20).  Northwood went over five minutes (6:09-0:41) without a made field goal before Savannah Fellenbaum made a triple to complete the first half scoring.

WSU led 41-28 despite Northwood having 14 free throw attempts to Wayne State's one in the opening 20 minutes.

Third Quarter
The Warriors led by as many as 15 (45-30) following a triple by senior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) 80 seconds into the second half.

NU cut its deficit to seven (52-45) with 2:05 left in the third stanza, but lay-ups from Thompson and Leister made it a 10-pont game (56-46) heading into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter
A triple by Ferguson extended the margin to 11 (59-48), before the Timberwolves went on a 8-1 spurt trimming the WSU advantage to four (60-56) with 5:16 left.

Ferguson tied her career-best with her third triple nearly two minutes later pushing the lead to seven (63-56).  Consecutive baskets by Northwood made it a three-point game (63-60) prompting a WSU timeout with 2:09 remaining.

Ferguson scored off a feed from Leister, and 40 seconds later Leister drilled a three extending the margin to eight (68-60) with 73 seconds left.  Ferguson made two foul shots with seven seconds left to seal the victory.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 43 percent (29-of-68) from the floor, compared to NU's 33 percent (21-of-63).  WSU connected on 31 percent (8-of-26) of its triple tries, with the Timberwolves making 6-of-17 (35 percent) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were just 7-of-11 (64 percent) from the charity stripe, while Northwood made 80 percent (16-of-20) of its foul shots.  Wayne State held a 52-35 edge in rebounding and scored 42 points in the paint compared to NU's 30 points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp notched her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Thompson recorded her first double-double with 11 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.  It was the first time since Feb. 3, 2022, when Sam Cherney and Grace George both had a double-double against Saginaw Valley, that two WSU players had a double-double in the same contest.  Ferguson matched a career-best with three triples while scoring a game-high 21 points.  Tripp also dished out a game-high five assists and was a game-best +23 (plus/minus).

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
St. John had team-high totals of 18 points and nine rebounds, while Lea Holmes contributed 17 points and five blocks, but was just 3-of-14 from the field.  Ella Miller chipped in with 11 points but was -20 (plus/minus) in 22:35 of action.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play its lone road game before exams with a Wednesday (11/20) contest at former GLIAC rival Hillsdale.
