Women's Hoops Leads From Start-To-Finish In 72-48 Victory Over Tiffin

Tripp, Thompson and Lutchka combine for 44 points and 27 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (3-2 overall) led from start to finish in posting a 72-48 triumph over visiting Tiffin University (3-2 overall) Saturday afternoon at the WSU Fieldhouse.  It was the Warriors final game of November as they will have an 11-day break before commencing GLIAC play on Dec. 5th with a home contest against Davenport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After junior Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) won the opening tip, Wayne State grabbed two offensive rebounds before senior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) scored from inside.  Tripp scored again 50 seconds later, before junior Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) made a fast-break lay-up prompting a Dragon timeout.  Lyn Lindeman had a steal and lay-up to put TU on the scoreboard.  

A Thompson steal and bucket by Tripp followed by a steal from sophomore McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) and a hoop by Thompson extended the lead to 10-2 just before the mid-point of the stanza.  After a Tiffin jumper, baskets by Thompson and Tripp and a pair of free throws by Thompson pushed the margin to 12 (16-4).  Junior Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) scored just before the end of the period giving the hosts a 20-8 advantage after 10 minutes.  WSU had 11 offensive rebounds in the quarter to Tiffin's seven defensive boards.

Second Quarter
A pair of free throws by senior Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) extended the lead to 14 (22-8).  Wayne State's lead remained between 10 and 14 points until Dragon Rachel Reichard converted a second-chance opportunity wtih 90 seconds left before intermission to cut the TU deficit to nine (30-21).

Wayne State went on an 8-1 run to end the first half.  A lay-up by Miller was followed by back-to-back triples by Lutchka and senior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma).  Six different Warriors accounted for points in the second period.  WSU led 38-22 at halftime.

Third Quarter
A Thompson lay-up, a triple by Leister, and a fast-break lay-up by Ferguson put the hosts in front by 23 (45-22) before Lindeman connected from beyond the arc.

Wayne State maintained a lead between 18 and 23 points for the rest of the period, while outscoring Tiffin 16-12 in the stanza.  All five starters scored in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
The Dragons cut their deficit to 17 (63-46) with 4:25 remaining on a pair of foul shots by both Lindeman and Megan Campbell.

The Wayne State defense limited Tiffin to just two points the rest of the way, while scoring nine for the 72-48 victory.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 43 percent (26-of-61) from the floor, compared to TU's 25 percent (13-of-52).  WSU was 5-of-18 (28 percent) from three-point range, while the Dragons were just 3-of-23 (13 percent).  Tiffin made a solid 83 percent (19-of-23) from the charity stripe, with the Warriors connecting on 15-of-21 (71 percent) of their foul shots.  Wayne State had a 47-30 edge in rebounding, including 18 offensive board.  WSU had a 38-20 advantage in points in the paint.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp tallied a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.  Thompson contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds to record her second double-double in the last three contests.  Lutchka added 10 points, while both Lutchka and Tripp were a +26, with Thompson being a +25.  Ferguson dished out a game-high five assists, while both Thompson and Ferguson had two steals.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
Lindeman scored a team-best 15 points and tied for team-high rebounding honors with Grace Craig with five boards apiece.  Isabelle Niederst had a team-best two assists, with Lindeman and Campbell each having three steals.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will take an 11-day break before playing its next game on Thursday, Dec. 5 at home vs. Davenport in the GLIAC opener for both squads.
