Volleyball to Host LSSU and SVSU in Final Regular Season Home Matches

Wayne State looks to sweep the regular-season series against both teams.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-11 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) is set to host its final two home matches of the 2024 regular season this week.  The Warriors will face Lake Superior State (7-16 overall, 2-10 GLIAC) on Friday at 7 p.m. for Family Night followed by Saginaw Valley State (6-17 overall, 3-9 GLIAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.

GLIAC Tournament Picture
With four matches to play in the regular season, the other two being on the road at Grand Valley State and Roosevelt next week, Wayne State enters this week fourth in the league standings.  The top eight teams will make the GLIAC Tournament while the first four will host a quarterfinal match (Nov. 20) before the semifinals and finals (Nov. 23-24) are played at the home of the highest remaining seed.  The Warriors are looking to hose and win a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match for the first time since 2021.

Last Time Out - Lake Superior State (W, 3-0: -19, -17, -18)
- Wayne State hit .280 to Lake Superior State's .079.
- The Warriors racked up 41 kills to just 13 errors on 100 total attacks.
- The Lakers countered with 32 kills and 23 errors on 114 swings.
- WSU's best set efficiency wise came in the third at .345 (14-4-29).
- LSSU's most potent period was the third as well at .103 (12-8-39).
- With 11 kills, Kayla Giroux made it three straight and all but three for the season with 10 or more.
- Katie Smith notched a red-hot hitting percentage of .615, a personal best.
- Smith sent home eight kills with no mishaps and 13 attempts.
- Ella Uganski wrapped up a solid week in which she hit .444 (14-2-27).
- Kendyl Andrews paced all players in digs with 23, a new season high and four off her career best.

Last Time Out - Saginaw Valley State (W, 3-1: -18, -17, 23-25, -19)
- The Warriors hit .197 as a team, their lowest hitting percentage in a win since Oct. Oct. 22, 2022 against Purdue Northwest (.189).
- For that .197 output, Wayne State tallied 46 kills to 23 errors on 117 total attacks.
- The Cardinals countered with a clip of .111, including 45 kills and 30 mishaps on 136 swings.
- WSU's best offensive set came in the fourth at .261 (9-3-23) while SVSU's best was the fourth as well at .219 (14-7-32).
- In the team head-to-head, the only category decided by more than three was digs, 51-43 in favor of the away team.
- Molly Miller notched the most kills and attacks of any Warrior with 16 and 41, respectively.
- Thanks to 10 digs, Miller tallied her fourth double-double of the season and 11th in the Green & Gold.
- Ella Uganski hit the ball well with eight kills and only one error on 14 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.
- Kayla Giroux struggled to put up her normal numbers with a .273 clip, 10 kills, four errors and 22 swings.
- Joining Miller in the double-double department was Kayla Dulgar with 37 assists and 13 digs.
- That effort gives the sophomore a double-double in back-to-back matches, three in her last four performances and four this fall.
- Maya Wegand came within two digs of her personal best of 11.

Senior Day
Prior to opening serve against the Cardinals on Saturday, the Warriors will recognize their five seniors.  They are outside hitter Molly Miller, outside hitter Keilyn Carpenter, middle blocker Ella Uganski, middle blocker Jenna Kray and defensive specialist Carly Rodman.
