Women's Hoops Hands Edinboro First Road Loss of the Season

The Warriors triumph in a 71-63 battle.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (5-3 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) defeated Edinboro (8-2 overall, 4-0 PSAC) 71-63 on Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Edinboro connected its first two shot attempts to take an early 4-0 lead.  A pair of Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) free throws, and a triple from Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) sandwiched around two successful Edinboro foul shots put the Warriors down one (6-5) with just over eight minutes remaining in the quarter.  A long-range jumper from Hayley Sims at the 7:29 mark ignited a 14-4 Edinboro burst before an Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) three-pointer brought the Warriors within eight (20-12).

A jump-shot by Ava Haddad and a deep three by Sims gave the Fighting Scots their largest lead of the game (13) pushing the score to 25-12 leading to a WSU timeout. The Warriors scored five of the final seven points of the stanza to cut the deficit to 10 (27-17). The 27 points is the most that Wayne State has given up in a single quarter this season.

SECOND QUARTER
ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford [Pensacola State / Cleveland State]) knocked down a quick basket in the paint before Ashten Boggs responded with two free throws to bring the Fighting Scot lead to 10.  The WSU defense held Edinboro to just two more points in the half while scoring 11 more of their own closing the half with back-to-back triples by Ayrault, and Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start), entering halftime down 31-30.  The four total points allowed is the lowest that WSU held an opponent to in one quarter of the campaign.

THIRD QUARTER
Sims connected on a mid-range jumper to extend Edinboro's lead to three. The Warriors claimed their first lead of the contest on a McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) triple to give WSU the 35-33 advantage before an immediate response by the Fighting Scots, reclaiming their advantage 36-35.

WSU and EU went blow-for-blow for the remainder of the stanza, with neither team garnering a lead larger that five when Ferguson nailed another three giving the Green and Gold a 45-40 point lead. Buckets by Haddad and Sims cut the Warrior lead to one prior to Lexi Boyke (Frankenmuth, Mich.) hitting her first three-pointer as a Warrior with 3:02 remaining in the third.  The Fighting Scots scored the final four points of the stanza as the two teams entered the final 10 minutes tied at 48 apiece.

FOURTH QUARTER
Haddad began the final period with a lay-up to break the tie and put Edinboro ahead by two (50-48).  Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) scored on the two ensuing WSU possessions claiming a 52-50 Warrior lead.  The Green and Gold would not trail for the remainder of the game, despite the Fighting Scots tying the score three times.  With under a minute to go, Haddad hit another field goal to get within one possession (66-63).  WSU closed the game by going 5-of-6 from the foul line, earning a hard-fought 71-63 victory.
