Strong Second Half Propels Men's Basketball To 74-66 Road Win At Northwood

Tamario Adley scored a career-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (4-5 overall) rallied from a 14-point second half deficit to earn a 74-66 road victory at Northwood University (4-7 overall) Thursday evening at Riepma Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
NU's Elijah Watson scored the first four points of the game as WSU went over three minutes without a made field goal until Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb CC]) connected from three-point range to knot the score at 4-4.  Trailing 6-4, Wayne State made its next four free throws - two each by Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) and Carlos Paul III (Southfield, Mich. / Cornerstone Lincoln-King [Missouri State - West Plains]) for an 8-6 advantage.

Northwood scored the next six points before a Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) lay-up pulled the Warriors within two (12-10).  The teams traded buckets over the next five minutes with the Timberwolves margin between two and five points during that stretch.  An offensive rebound and put-back by NU's Nick Ellis with 3:15 left before intermission extended the hosts advantage to seven (24-17).

Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher), in his first game in December, scored WSU's final six points of the opening 20 minutes, but the hosts led 33-23 at halftime.

Second Half
A Watson lay-up to start the second half scoring pushed the Northwood lead to 14 (37-23), which would be its largest of the game.

Wayne State responded with six consecutive points, including four by Harris after a lay-up by Kelvin Tamakloe (Accra, Ghana / Spring Creek Academy [Blinn College]), to pull within eight (37-29).  Two foul shots by NU' Will Young II breifly halted the Warrior rally, but a jumper from Lee, Jr., four straight points by Adley, and a jumper by Williams, Jr. was followed by two foul shots by Lee, Jr. to knot the game at 39-39 with 12:47 remaining.  Harris converted an old-fashioned three-point play to conclude the 12-0 spurt by the Warriors which gave the guests a 42-41 advantage.

The contest was tied at 44-44 and 46-46 before an Adley steal and dunk put Wayne State in front for good.  Another Adley bucket and a triple from Lee, Jr. pushed the margin to seven (53-46) with just over nine minutes left.  The WSU lead was trimmed to four (53-49) on a three-pointer by NU's De'Airrus Ware, but the Warriors scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 10-point advantage (61-51) with 6:39 remaining.

An offensive rebound and put back by Adley with 4:15 left restored the 10 point margin (63-53).  The Timberwolves were within seven (65-58) with 3:07 remaining following a triple by Brayden Szamrej.  Adley connected from beyond the arc making it 68-58.  After a 5-0 run by Northwood, WSU sealed the victory by going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe over the final 35 seconds.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, while limiting NU to 32 percent (22-of-69).  WSU was just 3-of-21 (14 percent) from beyond the arc, with the Timberwolves connecting on 30 percent (9-of-30) of their triple tries.  The Warriors were an outstanding 25-of-28 (89 percent) from the charity stripe, while Northwood made its final 13 foul shots to finish 13-of-17 (77 percent).  NU won the rebounding battle 49-37, but Wayne State out-scored the hosts 36-24 in the paint, 17-7 off both turnovers and fast break, and 25-21 in bench scoring.
