Fourth Quarter Shooting Woes Lead to Three Point Women's Basketball Road Loss at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (6-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) fell 59-56 at the University of Findlay (10-3 overall, 3-1 G-MAC) in the final contest of the 2024 portion of the campaign on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Both squads started the game slow offensively, as neither team tallied a point until the 8:41 mark when UF's Kate Ellis connected on a pair of free throws.  McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) quickly responded with a driving lay-up in the next WSU possession (2-2).  A scoring drought fell upon both teams, as the game remained a stand-still for just over three minutes, until Addisyn Freeman nailed a long range triple to give the Oilers a 5-2 lead.  Janae Hoying extended the Findlay lead to five after a driving lay-up.  Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) saw her hook shot go through the net, cutting the deficit to three (7-4).  A floater by Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) and a free throw from Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start) along with seven more Oiler points put the Warriors behind 14-7 after the first 10 minutes of play.

SECOND QUARTER
Ferguson opened the scoring for the Warriors in the second stanza as she connected on two triples that were sandwiched around a UF lay-up, but WSU still trailed 16-13.  A Thompson free throw brought Wayne State within two, before McKenna Stephens and Chloe Callahan knocked down back-to-back long range jumpers, extending the Oiler lead to eight (22-14).  Two free throws from Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) led to a 12-2 spurt for the Green and Gold, putting the Warriors ahead 26-24 entering the halftime break.

THIRD QUARTER
Wayne State tallied the first seven points of the second half, as Leister, Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center), and Lutchka all scored, with Tripp's lay-up pushing her past the 1,000 career point mark, and making her the 20th Warrior to do so.  A pair of Ellis free throws, and an Alyssa Ziehler lay-up brought Findlay within five (33-28), before a Thompson jumper and a Leister three pointer pushed the WSU lead to 10 with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter.  Back-to-back buckets for UF cut the Warrior advantage to six (38-32).  Lexi Boyke (Frankenmuth, Mich.) and Thompson both splashed shots to put the Green and Gold on top by 10 once again.  Findlay outscored WSU 5-4 to close out the stanza, with Wayne State holding a 46-37 advantage over the host Oilers with 10 minutes remaining.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Warriors led by 11 (50-39) with 6:45 remaining after Ferguson split a pair from the charity stripe.  WSU's advantage was 10 (52-42) following a Leister lay-up with just over six minutes left.  Findlay scored the next 11 points to take a 53-52 lead as Wayne State went scoreless for nearly five minutes until Thompson sank both foul shots with 77 seconds remaining, which put the Warriors ahead 54-53.  A jumper by Ellis on the ensuing possession gave UF a 55-54 lead.  WSU missed its next three shot attempts, but the Oilers were only 2-of-4 from the foul line for a three-point advantage.  UF's Ella Meschler made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to seal the win for Findlay.

Wayne State was just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from the field in the final period, while Findlay made five field goals and 11 foul shots to out-score the Warriors 22-10 in the stanza.
