Softball Splits On Opening Day of Dome Invitational

Warriors rebound after game one loss, to defeat Minnesota Duluth.

ROSEMONT, Ill. --  The Wayne State University softball squad (1-1 overall) began its 2024 campaign on Thursday evening at the Dome Invitational hosted by Lewis University.  The host Flyers (4-2 overall) upended the Warriors 8-3 in game one of the season for WSU.  Wayne State then defeated Minnesota Duluth (4-1 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
Lewis tallied two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second for the early advantage as Grace Kmak had an RBI single and Gabi Nilles added an RBI double.

The Warriors evened the score with a pair of runs in the top of the third on a trio of hits.  Senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) cracked a two-out double and scored on a single by sophomore Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union), who advanced all the way to third on a Flyer error.  Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) had an infield single to plate Cole.

LU grabbed a 4-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles by Anna Frafjord and Evie Calderon.

WSU pulled within a run in the top of the fourth as Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.) had back-to-back one-out doubles, before graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) delivered an RBI single.

Frafjord had another RBI double in the fourth and Lewis tacked on three more runs in the fifth.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (0-1) allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks in three innings with one strikeout.  Sophomore Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) tossed the final three innings allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Allie Wondrasek (2-0) earned the victory for Lewis by surrendering three runs (two earned) on eight hits in four innings with two strikeouts.  Payton Wuske notched the save by allowing just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts in three innings of relief.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Cole and Mia Hool each had two hits for WSU with Cole recording an RBI.

LEADING THE FLYERS
Frafjord had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI, while Nilles contributed two hits and three RBI.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Kendal Jenkins.

Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the second on a two-out double by Mia Hool, an RBI single by Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), who later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

UMD re-gained the lead (3-2) on a two-run single by Elle Potts in the top of the third.

In a see-saw affair, the Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.  Cole had a leadoff single and stole second.  Following a walk to Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), Miller's sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position.  Freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) had an RBI single, before Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) plated Forman with an RBI single.

WSU completed the scoring with a run in the fifth.  Cole double and went to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Forman.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed three earned runs while scattering 10 hits in seven innings.  She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Allyssa Williams (0-1) started for the Bulldogs and was tagged for four earned runs on six hits and three walks in three innings.  Maddy Walsh allowed just an unearned run on three hits in three innings with five strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Cole, Maddie Hool and senior Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) each had two hits, while Forman drove in a pair.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Jenkins had three hits and an RBI, while Potts drove in two.

UP NEXT
Wayne State has a very short turn-around having to play the first two time slots on Friday vs. Truman State and Minnesota State-Moorhead.
