Softball Earns Another Split On Day 2 Of Lewis Dome Invitational

Josephson had four hits and two RBI in the two games.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team continued its opening weekend of play on Friday at the Lewis Dome Invitational.  After playing the last two games on Thursday night, the Warriors were scheduled to play the first two games on Friday morning.  In the opener, WSU fell 3-2 in eight innings to Truman State (5-7 overall), but rallied for a 7-6 triumph over Minnesota State-Moorhead (6-5 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
In a pitcher's duel between Wayne State senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and TSU's Madie Anderson, the game was tied 1-1 after five innings.

The Bulldogs scored once in the bottom of the first on a one-out RBI triple by Charlotte Chelich.

The Warriors evened the score in the top of the fourth as senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) smacked a one-out double to center field, and scored on a two-out single by Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

Truman State left the bases loaded in the fourth before WSU took a 2-1 advantage in the top of the sixth.  Bonk walked to start the frame, and Miller sacrificed pinch-runner Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) to second.  A ground out moved Forman to third where she scored on an infield single by Mia Hool.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bonk issued a one-out walk, and with two outs Bulldog Breianna Klein laced an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.

Wayne State was unable to score in the top of the eighth on the international tie-breaker rule, while TSU had placed runner Cameryn Patterson move to third on a single by Cali Coombs and score on a one-out sacrifice fly by Madi McCarty.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (0-2) allowed two earned runs on six hits in 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts to five walks.

Anderson pitched the first five innings for TSU and allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.  Kaylyn Jones (2-1) earned the win in relief, surrendering just one earned run on one hit in three innings.

Mia Hool had two hits and both RBI.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Chelich had two hits, five total bases and an RBI, while Coombs had two hits and a walk.

GAME 2 RECAP
Wayne State rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the fourth innings for a 7-6 victory over the Dragons.

Moorhead scored twice in the top of the first on an RBI double by Evey Evans and a sacrifice fly by Sam Centeno.

WSU battled back scoring twice in the bottom of the frame.  Junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.).  Sophomore Kennedy Cole () tripled to right center, then scored on an RBI ground out by Forman to knot the game at 2-2.

MSUM tallied four runs in the top of the fourth on four hits.  Evans had an RBI single, followed by an RBI double off the bat of Mack Gallagher.  Eliya Johnson then had a two-run double to put the guests up 6-2.

Sophomore Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a two-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a triple by Josephson.

After the Dragons left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Warriors responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Cole worked a 10-pitch walk, and went to second on a single by Forman.  Miller's bunt single loaded the bases.  Junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had an RBI single and with two-out Maddie Hool laced a two-run single to right center to even the score at 6-6.  Josephson then followed with a single on an 0-1 offering to put WSU ahead.

Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.) retired five of MSUM's final seven batters to preserve the lead.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) started for WSU and allowed six earned run on eight hits and three walks in four innings with two strikeouts.

Martinez (1-0) blanked the Dragons on one hit and three walks over the final three innings with one strikeout.

Teagan Clemmons allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings.  Azalya Lopez (3-3) was tagged for five earned runs on eight hits and one walk in two innings.  Evans retired three of the four batters she faced in the bottom of the sixth.

Josephson had three hits and two RBI, while Forman, Miller, Ruczynski, and Maddie Hool each contributed two hits.

Evans had three hits and two RBI.

Wayne State will conclude play at the Lewis Dome Invitational with a Saturday morning contest vs. William Jewell.
