WSU edges New Haven 5-3; falls to UMSL 9-4.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (4-7 overall) went 1-1 on day two of its spring break trip.  WSU edged New Haven (0-1 overall) 5-3 in the opener, then fell 9-4 against Missouri-St. Louis (12-10 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Chargers grabbed an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first on a single, a stolen base, and an RBI single by Brianna Trueman.

The Warriors responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  Junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a leadoff triple to right center and scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).  Graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.), who had walked on five pitches following Josephson's three-bagger, scored on a two-out RBI single by freshman Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  Hool advanced to second on a walk to junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), and scored on an RBI single to center by sophomore Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.).

Wayne State extended its lead with a pair of runs in the second.  Josephson smacked a one-out double before Hodder drilled her first home run of the season to right field.

UNH cut its defict in half with a two-run fifth inning.  A walk, a single and a WSU miscue preceded a two-run single by Halle Frederick.

In the top of the seventh, New Haven's first batter reached on a Warrior error before an infield single put the tying run on base.  The next UNH batter fouled out to first with freshman Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) throwing a dart to third base to nail the runner trying to advance.  A ground out then ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) improved to 3-2 after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.  She struck out seven and walked one.

Skylar Grifffin (0-1) started for UNH and was tagged for five earned runs in 1.1 innings on five hits and two walks.  Viana McKinley held WSU scoreless for the final 4.2 innings on four hits with two strikeouts to one walk.

The Tritons scored once in the bottom of the first on a single, a walk, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.

UMSL tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second on three doubles before having the third two-bagger thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple.

WSU regained the lead in the third on a laedoff single by Forman followed by a sacrifice bunt by Miller.  Mia Hool then ripped an RBI double to right center.
