Baseball Shut Out at Saint Leo

The Warriors will look to rebound on Tuesday against Minnesota Crookston in Davenport, Fla.

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Following a day off on Sunday, the Wayne State University baseball squad (9-5 overall) played a single contest at Saint Leo (18-2 overall) on Monday evening.  However, the Warriors fell 5-0 to the No. 14-ranked Lions at Thomas B. Southard Stadium for its third loss in a row.

It was difficult for WSU to get anything going on offense against SLU's pitching staff, as five Lions combined to blank the Green and Gold on two hits and four walks.  Wayne State struck out 18 times, which was the most this season.  The team also struck out 16 times in the previous game vs. Northwood last Saturday.

After a scoreless opening inning, the hosts scored first with two runs in the second on a two-run single, and again in the third inning on a home run to left field by Buck Anderson.  All runs were charged to Wayne State starting pitcher Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo), who worked three innings and allowed four hits and two walks in addition to the trio of earned runs.

The Warriors had a golden opportunity to counter in the fourth frame, as two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with just one out.  However, a strikeout and a fly out stranded all three runners on base.

The game would remain 3-0 SLU for the next two innings thanks to the work by Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), as the sophomore pitched two perfect innings of relief in the fourth and fifth frames.

Saint Leo made it 4-0 in the sixth inning when Callan Moss homered to center field off Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon).  Plummer finished the sixth inning with just the one run allowed, before Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)) handled a scoreless seventh inning despite a walk.

WSU had no hits until the eighth inning, when back-to-back singles from CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) and Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) broke up the Lions' combined no-hit bid.  They were left on base when the next two Warriors struck out.

Saint Leo tallied its final run in the bottom of the eighth via a walk, two stolen bases, and an RBI single.  Avery Mona (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit (Central Michigan)) finished the Green and Gold's relief efforts by working the inning.  WSU went down in order in the ninth.

The guests had their biggest challenge against SLU's Evan Wolf, who handled four innings without allowing a hit and punching out seven.

Wayne State will play another game in Florida as part of its Spring Break trip on Tuesday in Davenport, Fla., against Minnesota Crookston.  Action is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Northeast Regional Park #4.
