LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team snapped its four-game losing streak in a big way on Wednesday defeating Florida Southern by a score of 19-3. Next up on the schedule, the Warriors will conclude their trip to Florida on Thursday with a 12:45 p.m. first pitch against GLIAC foe Purdue Northwest.
Wayne State scored 19 runs on 17 hits, five of which were for extra bases including a trio of home runs. Those 19 runs included four in the first, two in the second, four in the fourth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and five more in the eighth.
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) set the tone right away with a lead-off home run to right in the top of the first, his second of the season and third as a Warrior. That same inning,
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) hit a three-run blast to right center, also his second of 2024. The last shot came from
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline), the first of his career, a two-run job in the eighth.
McGuire, Ray and Tuccinardi were three of seven Warriors to record multiple hits along with
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS),
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.),
Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) and
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)).
Pitching for the first time in six days,
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) improved to 3-1 with 7.0 innings pitched, three earned runs given up on six hits, three walks and seven strikeouts.
First out of the bullpen,
Keegan Pulford-Thorpe ( Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)) made it back-to-back shutout outings with a scoreless eighth (1 H, 2 BB) before
Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville (Kalamazoo Valley CC)) threw up a zero for the ninth (2 H, 1 K).
