Baseball Shuts Out Purdue Northwest, Kilander Strikes Out 14

Kilander didn't give up a hit until the second batter of the eighth inning.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) came within five outs of a no-hitter and struck out 14 as the Wayne State University baseball team (11-6 overall) defeated Purdue Northwest (7-5) 4-0 to conclude its Florida trip.  Next up, the Warriors will begin GLIAC play on Saturday, March 23 with a doubleheader against Davenport in Hammond, Ind.

Kilander improved to 4-0 this season and 12-3 in his career while tossing the second nine-inning complete game as a Warrior and first without giving up a run.  The junior right-hander faced just one batter over the minimum without allowing a single walk.

Offensively, Wayne State went ahead 1-0 in the first when Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) singled in Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) with a base knock to right field.

Four innings later, the Warriors added some insurance and extended their advantage to four.  Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) brought in both Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) and Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) on a single to center.  Then, Hatzigeorgiou was at it again with an RBI groundout that pushed across McGuire.

Hatzigeorgiou (3-for-4) registered his eighth multi-hit game of the season and fifth with three or more.  Tuccinardi (2-for-2, 2 BB, 1 R) reached base in all four of his plate appearances and has gone five for his last 10 at the dish with four runs scored, three batted in and first career home run.
