Softball Blanks Saint Michael's After Being Edged By IUP

Bonk tosses three-hit shutout and strikes out 10.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (8-9 overall) rebounded from a 4-1 setback to Indiana University of Pennsylvania [IUP] (14-5 overall), with a 6-0 whitewash of Saint Michael's College (4-10 overall) on Friday afternoon at The Spring Games being held at the Diamondplex fields.

GAME 1 RECAP
WSU scored its lone run in the top of the first as junior designated player Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) worked a six-pitch walk and moved to second on a bunt single by graduate student catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.).  Senior shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) followed with a bunt single to load the bases with zero outs.  Freshman right fielder Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) ripped an RBI single down the third-base line to make it 1-0.  However, the next three batters were able to get another run home.

The Crimson Hawks knotted the score in the bottom of the first on a single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single.  IUP grabbed the lead in the third with a one-out single and back-to-back two-out RBI extra-base hits.

IUP added an insurance run in the fourth on a one-out walk, and back-to-back singles.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) took the loss (4-4) after allowing four earned runs on nine hits in six innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Olivia Hillegas (2-0) limited WSU to one run on seven hits in seven innings with two strikeouts to one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman went 3-for-3 with the lone RBI.

GAME 2 RECAP
Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff walk by Josephson, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Hodder which saw Josephson scamper to third.  Miller singled down the left field line scoring runner Lauren Fritz ().

Meanwhile, WSU hurler Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) retired seven Purple Knights in a row after allowing two base runners (walk and a single) in the top of the first.

The Warrior offense added to its lead in the bottom of the second as Bonk had a leadoff single and moved to second on a two-out base hit by sophomore Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.) on the eighth pitch of the at bat.  Josephson then laced a two-run double into right center to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hodder had a leadoff double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Miller.  Forman bounced a single through the left side scoring Hodder with WSU's fourth run.

Bonk continued her mastery retiring 12 of the last 14 SMC hitters.  The Wayne State offense increased the margin to 6-0 in the sixth with a pair of runs.  Josephson had a one-out single and Hodder walked on five pitches.  A single by Miller loaded the bases, wtih Josephson scoring on Forman's sacrifice fly.  Both runners moved up a base on the throw home that got past the SMC backstop.  WSU's last run was scored on another Purple Knights error.
