Softball Concludes Spring Break Trip With 6-6 Mark In Florida

Warriors dropped a 5-2 and 1-0 decision on Saturday.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-11 overall) finished its spring break trip going 6-6 after a pair of setbacks on Saturday.  WSU fell 5-2 to Saint Anselm College 8-12 overall) before dropping a 1-0 decision to Northern State (14-6 overall) in a game halted after 4 1/2 innings due to NSU needing to catch a flight.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Hawks scored twice in the top of the first on a one-out walk, a two-out double followed by an RBI single.

The Warriors scored once in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles by junior designated player Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) and graduate student catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.).

SAC tallied three runs in the top of the seventh on a leadoff single, and three consecutive one-out base hits followed by a sacrifice fly.

WSU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back two-out doubles by Hodder and senior shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).

WSU finished just 3-of-15 in the game with runners on base.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings to fall to 4-5.  She struck out three and walked one.

Haile Hicks (7-2) limited WSU to two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hodder went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.

LEADING THE HAWKS
Sam Wiberg and Madison Trisket each had two hits, while Ava Caputo and Wiberg each drove in a pair.

GAME 2 RECAP
WSU senior pitcher Alexis Bonk allowed two walks and two hits in the bottom of the first but escaped without allowing a run thanks to a line drive double play.

NSU had two runners on in the second with one out, but a fly out and a pop out ended that frame.

In the third, the Wolves leadoff batter Claire Zbylut walked and stole second on an extremely close play.  She moved to third on a two-out single and scored on a single by Avarie Eagle.

WSU freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) had a leadoff single in the fourth, but the next three batters were retired.

In the top of the fifth, pinch-hitter Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) had a one-out single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Hodder singled up the middle, with the NSU shortstop making a diving stop and threw home to get Lewandowski in a run down to end the game.

As mentioned above, the game was stopped because NSU had to catch a flight even though the game started less than 10 minutes after the scheduled first pitch.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (2-6) allowed one run on five hits in four innings.  She struck out one and walked four.

Lexi Chase (3-2) blanked WSU on five hits in five innings with four strikeouts to zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman went 2-for-2.

LEADING THE WOLVES
Eagle went 2-for-2 and drove in the game's only run.
