TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-13 overall) dropped a pair of non-conference in-region games at Tiffin University (14-12 overall) on Wednesday afternoon falling 8-3 in the opener, and 2-1 in the nightcap.
GAME 1 RECAP
TU's Baylee Mirgon smacked a three-run two-out home run in the bottom of the first giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors scored once in the top of the second on a leadoff walk to senior
Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon), a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop
Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) and an RBI double by senior second baseman
Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield).
The Dragons extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by Maci Head and two-run shot by Aubrie Harper.
Head recorded her second home run of the contest with a solo shot in the fourth to make it 7-1.
In the top of the fifth, Favela had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out double by senior
Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln).
Tiffin scored once in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a pair of singles, and a sacrifice fly.
Favela had a one-out single in the seventh, and scored on a double by freshman left fielder
Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).
IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (2-7) allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks in three innings with four strikeouts. Â Sophomore
Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) hurled the final three frames allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Jules King (7-4) went the distance for Tiffin surrendering three earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts to one walk.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Favela went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
LEADING THE DRAGONS
Head went 3-for-4 with nine total bases along with two runs scored and two RBI, while Migron had two hits and four RBI.
GAME 2 RECAP
After having the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first and not being able to score, WSU went ahead 1-0 in the top of the third. Â Graduate student catcher
Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had a leadoff double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder
Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) and scored on a single through the right side by Lewandowski.
The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when King reached on a two-out infield single, and scored on a double by Reagan Mengerink to knot the game at 1-1. Â Head then ripped an RBI double down the first base line scoring pinch-runner Sam Peterkoski.Â
Wayne State had two base runners in the sixth, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.
Hodder had a seven-pitch walk to start the top of the seventh, but the next three batters were retired.
IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman
Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Lexi Key pitched the first four innings for the Dragons and allowed one earned run on five hits with one walk. Â Claire Feldkamp (7-5) earned the win in relief blanking WSU on three walks and zero hits with two strikeouts over the final three frames.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lewandowski had two hits and an RBI, while Hodder reached base three times via a double and two walks.
