Softball To Begin Post Spring Break Schedule At Tiffin On Wednesday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-11 overall) commences its post spring break trip schedule with an in-region non-conference doubleheader at Tiffin on March 20th. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m. at Paradiso Fields in Tiffin.

SERIES HISTORY
WSU and Tiffin have met 41 times in softball dating back to 2001.  The first four meetings took place in Florida before a twinbill in Ohio in 2008.  From 2009 through 2018, the schools met as GLIAC rivals before the Dragons departed for the GMAC.  The squads squared off in Florida in 2019 and 2020, and last met in 2021 in Glenville, W. Va.

The Warriors have a 26-15 edge in the all-time series, including a 15-13 mark in GLIAC regular-season contests.  The teams met four times in the GLIAC Tournament (all in Findlay) between 2012 and 2016, with WSU claiming the victory in all four outings.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Freshman right fielder/catcher Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) was selected GLIAC Player of the Week after hitting .435 (10-for-23) over the last eight contests in Florida.

For the season, junior designated player Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) is hitting a team-best .442 (23-for-52) with seven extra-base hits and a .615 slugging percentage.  She has walked nine times for a .525 on-base percentage.

A pair of senior infielders in Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) and Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) are both batting .321, while Forman has a team-high 13 RBI.

Senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) compiled a 2-1 mark with a shutout over her final four appearances in Florida with a 2.37 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.

Freshman hurler Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) has a 4-5 record with one save in 11 appearances (10 starts).  She has a 3.23 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 65 innings.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
Tiffin enters Wednesday's doubleheader with a 12-12 overall record after splitting a home twinbill on Sunday against Saginaw Valley State.  Tiffin won the opener 4-3, but fell 9-2 in the nightcap.

Freshman catcher Reagan Mengerink is hitting a team-best .416 (32-for-77) with six doubles and a team-high 18 RBI.  Senior second baseman Maddie Woods leads the squad with a .461 on-base percentage and eight steals, while batting .379 (25-for-66).  TU has smacked 10 home runs this spring, including three each by junior third baseman Maci Head and freshman centerfielder Baylee Mirgon.

In the circle, Tiffin has two primary throwers in senior Claire Feldkamp and freshman Jules King.  Feldkamp is 6-5 with a 3.21 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 72 innings.  King is 6-4 with two saves and 68 strikeouts in 59.2 innings, along with a 3.40 ERA.

Third-year head coach Paige McMenemy is a former All-GLIAC pitcher at Ashland (Second Team in 2017) following two seasons (2015 and 2016) at Akron.  Her sister Megan is an assistant coach at TU after playing for Ohio State and Ohio University.

UP NEXT
Wayne State is scheduled to begin GLIAC play this Sunday at Ferris State, however the weather forecast for this weekend in Big Rapids does not look conducive to getting the games played.  Stay tuned to WSUAthletics.com, as well as our social media outlets for schedule updates.
