Baseball Drops 13-10 Slugfest Against Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the ninth before holding off the Warriors in the home half.

DETROIT -- Twenty-three runs, 12 pitchers and three lead changes later, Saginaw Valley State (15-6 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) stole Wayne State's (15-7 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) 2024 GLIAC home opener 13-10 on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Harwell Field.  Holding on to a one-run lead, 10-9 entering the top of the ninth, the Cardinals brought in four runs to take back the advantage for good.

Eight of Wayne State's 10 hits came from the top four spots in the lineup in Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)), CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS), Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.).

Starting with McGuire (3-for-5), the junior scored twice while driving in five thanks in part to a two-run homer over the monster in the fifth, his team-leading fourth of the season.  The switch hitter was joined in the multi-hit club by Maury (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Hitzelberger (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB).

After those three, the Warriors final two base knocks came from Hatzigeorgiou (1-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 BB) and Logan Tobel (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 BB) down in the seven spot.

On the mound, seven WSU arms threw a pitch starting with Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven).  Out of the bullpen came Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland), Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville (Jackson CC)), Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo), David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) and Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day).

Miller (1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 SO) was the most effective while Stively (1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 SO) suffered the loss, his second of the season (0-2).

Next up on the schedule for Wayne State is a home doubleheader with Parkside on Friday beginning at 12 p.m.
