Baseball to Continue GLIAC Play Against Parkside and at Grand Valley State

The Warriors will host the Rangers on Friday before traveling to the Lakers on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-7 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) will play its first GLIAC doubleheaders of the season on Friday and Saturday.  The Warriors will host Parkside (11-10 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) before hitting the road for Grand Valley State (11-10 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) the next day.

Wayne State played its first home conference game of the season on Wednesday dropping a slugfest with Saginaw Valley State at Harwell Field, 13-10.  The Warriors were holding on to a one-run lead, 10-9, entering the ninth before the Cardinals scored four runs in their half to take back the lead for good.  For this week's opponents, WSU has won 16 straight against Parkside and eight of 12 vs. Grand Valley State.

Parkside comes in on a three-game skid after winning seven in a row prior to that.  Coached by Zac Charbonneau in his second season, UWP is hitting .276 as a team while their pitching staff sports a 7.35 ERA.  Offensively, three Rangers are above the .300 mark including Andrew Harris at .424 (fourth in the league), Peter Fusek at .384 and John St. Clair at .310.  On the mound, Kaleb Schulist is Parkside's only arm with at least 10 innings thrown and a sub-five ERA at 3.32.

Not only will Grand Valley State be playing at home for the first time this season on Saturday, so will its first-year head coach Jordan Keur.  Since opening the spring with a five-game winning streak and seven victories in eight outings, the Lakers have gone 3-9.  They hit .265 as a squad, but lead the GLIAC in ERA at 3.68.  Offensively, GVSU is paced by Connor Schuman (.313 average), Jonas Gulbrandsen (.309), Kyle Nott (.306) and Logan Anderson (.303).  Pitching wise, 2023 First Team All-GLIAC performer Nick Rutkowski is back with a 3.03 ERA through a team-best 29.2 innings pitched.
