Softball Starts Play In Florida With A Split

Miller and Ruczynski lead WSU offensively in win over UMC.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (3-6 overall) began its Florida schedule with an 8-0 loss to Minnesota Duluth (18-5 overall) in five innings, but rebounded for a 4-2 triumph over Minnesota Crookston (5-16 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
The host Bulldogs scored once in the bottom of the first on two walks and an RBI single by Julia Gronholz.

UMD extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs.  Kate Mohr had a ground-rule double, went to third on a bloop double by Morgan McMillan.  Mohr scored on a sacrifice fly by Kendal Jenkins, while McMillan crossed the plate on a single by Nicole Schmitt.

WSU had base runners in three consecutive innings (2nd, 3rd and 4th), and had two hits in the first three batters in the fifth.  Singles by junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) and freshman Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), preceded a back-to-back ground outs.

Minnesota Duluth notched four consecutive hits to start the bottom of the fifth, prompting a WSU pitching change, but back-to-back walks and a single provided the Bulldogs with five runs for the 8-0 win.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) started for WSU and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits in four-plus innings.  Bonk struck out three and walked three.  Sophomore Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) faced the final three batters.

Maddy Walsh (5-0) pitched the first four innings for UMD allowing three hits with two strikeouts.  Allyssa Williams pitched the top of the fifth and allowed two hits with one strikeout.

Five different WSU batters had one single each.

Kate Mohr went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI

GAME 2 RECAP
The Warriors ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Minnesota-Crookston .

The Golden Eagles scored once in the top of the first on a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out single by Rayna French.

WSU evened the score in the bottom of the second on a one-out single by senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.), a stolen base and a two-out single by Ruczynski.

Wayne State grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the fourth on a one-out bunt single by Miller, and back-to-back two-out base hits by Ruczynski and sophomore Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.).

The Warriors added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on consecutive one-out singles by Miller and pinch-hitter Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln).  Miller scored on a throwing error, while Lewandowski crossed the plate on Ruczynski's sacrifice fly.

Crookston loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, and scored once on a walk but WSU hurler Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) recorded a strikeout and a ground out to end the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (2-2) allowed two earned runs on six hits while tossing the complete game.  She struck out seven and walked two.

Thayda Houser (1-5) tossed the first 5.1 innings for the Golden Eagles, and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits.  She struck out two and walked one.  Alexa Guilford retired both batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller went 3-for-3 with three runs, while Ruczynski had two hits and two RBI.  Martinez also had a multi-hit game.

LEADING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Paige Shwaluk had two of UMC's six hits.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play twice on Sunday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games - 3 p.m. vs. New Haven and 5:15 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis.
