GRAYSLAKE, Ill. -- With two outs and a runner on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Parkside's Owen Brock hit a groundball to
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)) down the third base line. Paulina made a slick backhanded stop but his throw to first was wide of
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) and John St. Clair scored to give his team a 9-8 walk-off win. The Warriors (20-12 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) and Rangers (15-15 overall, 4-8 GLIAC) will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. eastern time in Kenosha, Wis.
Wayne State put up a three spot in the top of the first when
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) doubled in
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS), Tuccinardi scored McGuire with a groundout to second and Paulina singled in
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North).
Parkside scored twice in the third to pull within two before the visitors tacked on a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth frames. In the fifth,
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) came in after Maury reached on an error by the third baseman and
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) touched home on Tuccinardi's fielder's choice.
Then in the sixth, Paulina hit a solo home run to right, his second of the season, and Maury forced in
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) with a bases-loaded walk.
In the seventh, the Rangers cut the margin to two, 7-5, with three runs, all of which were unearned due to three Warrior errors. After Ray scored on a wild pitch and WSU stretched its advantage back to three in the top of the eighth, UWP notched a three spot of its own in the home half to make it an 8-8 game.
Wayne State's side was retired three up, three down in the ninth before Parkside sealed the deal in the last half inning of regulation.
