Offense Defeats Defense In Annual Spring Football Game

DETROIT -- On a sunny but breezy Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field, the Wayne State Offense defeated the Warrior defense 106-76 in the annual spring football game.

The WSU offense had three rushing touchdowns by redshirt junior D'Marco Singleton (Marysville, Mich.), redshirt senior Jeremiah Sterling (Benton Harbor, Mich. / St. Joseph), and redshirt freshman XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern). Tyus had the longest rush of the game, picking up a mishandled snap and going 63 yards. He finished with three carries for 71 yards. Sterling contributed 15 rushing attempts for 52 yards, with Singleton chipping in with six carries for 20 yards.

In terms of passing, all three quarterbacks saw time in the shotgun. Redshirt freshman Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / East Community Learning Center) was 12-of-15 for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Classmate Cane Mack (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) completed 7-of-13 passes for 67 yards and one score. Redshirt freshman Nigell Johnson (Flint, Mich. / Carman-Ainsworth) was 2-of-3 for 11 yards.

Leading the receiving corps was Singleton with six catches for 42 yards. Recording touchdown receptions were redshirt senior wide receiver Myles McKatherine (Chicago, Ill. / St. Rita of Cascia), redshirt sophomore tight end Nick Ostas (Blissfield, Mich.), and redshirt junior wideout Manny Harris (Kankakee, Ill. / Bishop McNamara). Redshirt junior tight end John Rayba (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Stoney Creek) garnered a first down on all three of his receptions totaling 51 yards. Other big play catches were by redshirt freshman tight end Jobe Benschoter (Adrian, Mich. / Tecumseh) of 29 yards and redshirt junior wide receiver Pierce Muthui-Edwards (Southfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) of 36 yards.

A big play for the Warrior defense was a forced fumble by redshirt freshman safety Derrick Wallace, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Eastpointe) that led to an 80-yards fumble return for a touchdown by redshirt freshman cornerback Kejuan Houston (Belleville, Mich.).

Redshirt freshman linebacker Davon Dallas-Jackson (Detroit, Mich. River Rouge) was credited with three solo tackles, all resulting in sacks. Besides his fumble return, Houston had three solo tackles and a pass break-up. In addition to his forced fumble, Wallace made three other stops, including a sack. Redshirt junior linebacker Justin Hart (Redford, Mich. / Westland John Glenn) tallied six tackles (4 solo, 2 assisted), while redshirt freshman linebacker CJ Gordon (Benton Harbor, Mich. / Berrien Springs) had four solo tackles. Redshirt senior safety Brayden Vredeveld (Hudsonville, Mich.) notched four tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted) plus a pass break-up, while both redshirt freshman safety Josiah Buford (Flint, Mich. / Swartz Creek) and redshirt sophomore safety Devon Brown (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) recorded five stops (3 solo, 2 assisted) each.

In terms of special teams, redshirt senior kicker Jeremy Taras (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) made all three PAT attempts and was 2-of-4 on field goals connecting from 47 and 58 yards, and just missing from 60 and 62 yards. Redshirt freshman kicker Griffin Nowak (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) made a PAT and missed a 47-yard field goal attempt.

Today's game concluded the spring practice season. The team will report to camp on Saturday, August 10th in preparation for the season opener on Thursday, September 5th at Tiffin.
