Softball Allows Late Runs In Back-To-Back Losses At Parkside

WSU falls 5-4 and 7-5.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University softball team (14-21 overall, 6-8 GLIAC), fresh off a doubleheader sweep of visiting Grand Valley State this past Wednesday, dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at Wisconsin Parkside (13-24 overall, 4-8 GLIAC).  UWP won the opener 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, then broke a 5-5 deadlock with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the nightcap 7-5.

Game 1 Recap
The Rangers scored twice in the bottom of the first on a one-out hit by pitch followed by a two-run home run by Mia Johnson.

WSU scored once in the top of the third as Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.) had a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), and scored on a single by Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.).

Parkside increased its advantage to 4-1 in the fourth with a single, a double and a two-run double by Toni Rodriguez.

The Warriors pulled even at 4-4 with a three-run sixth.  Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) had a leadoff double and scored on a one-out single by Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.), which preceded a two-run home run by Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  It was Long's first career four-bagger.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Meagan Maza was hit by a pitch.  Pinch-runner Eden Welling advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Cassie Rutledge.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (5-9) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings with three strikeouts to one walk.

Olivia Fee (2-2) earned the win in relief by blanking Wayne State on two hits over the final 1.2 innings with one strikeout.  Ellie Curtis worked the first 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) and Miller each had two hits, while Long had two RBI.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Rutledge had a team-best two hits, while both Johnson and Rodriguez had two RBI.

Game 2 Recap
WSU took a 1-0 lead three batters into the game.  Josephson had a leadoff double, moved to third on Hodder's team-leading 14th sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield).

The lead was short lived as UWP responded with four runs in the bottom of the first.  A walk, hit by pitch, RBI single by Johnson and two-run double by Rylee Batez prompted a pitching change.  The Rangers added a run on a sacrifice fly.

Parkside increased its lead to 5-1 in the third on a one-out and a two-out single by Tia Livernash.

In the top of the sixth, Forman had a leadoff home run for her team-leading second round tripper.  Following a one-out single by Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.), Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) smacked her second home run of the campaign.  WSU was able to generate a two-out rally to tie the game at 5-5.  Josephson singled before Hodder walked for a team-leading 19th time.  Favela delivered a game-tying single to right center.

UWP was able to regain the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.  A leadoff single was followed by a pop out.  Maza reached on an error before Taylor Delgado flied out, which should have been the third out of the inning.  A walk to Rutledge preceded a two-run single by Johnson.

IN THE CIRCLE
Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) allowed four earned runs on two hits, a walk and a HBP without recording an out.  Buckberger hurled the final six innings and limited Parkside to three runs (one earned) on six hits.  She struck out four and walked two.

KC Shickel started for the Rangers and allowed one earned run on five hits in 3.2 innings.  She struck out one and walked two.  Hope Maes tossed 1.2 innings surrendering three earned runs on four hits.  Olivia Masnica (5-4) garnered the win in relief despite allowing one earned run on two hits in 1.2 innings with one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson and Favela each had three hits, with Josephson scoring twice and Favela driving in a pair.

LEADING THE RANGERS
