Northwood Scores Three Runs Late to Defeat Wayne State Baseball

The Warriors will get back to GLIAC play with a four-game set against GVSU this weekend.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (23-13 overall) led Northwood (20-16 overall) 3-2 through six innings before the Timberwolves scored two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to win it 5-3.  Next up, the Warriors will get back to GLIAC play on Friday through Sunday with a four-game series against Grand Valley State at Harwell Field.

Wayne State was on the board first in the opening inning when Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) singled to short scoring CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) from third.  Northwood responded with a run in both the first and second frames to take a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth, Maury was at it again when he singled to third base bringing in Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North).  The next inning, the Warriors took the lead back, 3-2, after Nate Crossman (Canton, Mich. / Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard) notched a base knock to center forcing in Van Sicklen.

However, with an out in the bottom of the seventh, WSU committed back-to-back errors and NU tallied a pair of unearned runs.  The home team tacked on an insurance score in the eighth after a wild pitch by the visitors.

Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) achieved the longest outing of his career thanks to six innings of work on 74 pitches.  Langlois gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

First out of the bullpen, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)) was saddled with the loss (0-1) after a frame in which he surrendered those two unearned runs on two hits.

From there, Wayne State's pitching was a combination of Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland), Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) and Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter).  Nash lasted two-thirds of an inning, Nazelli was unable to retire a batter and Rosen set down the only batter he faced.
