DETROIT -- Holding on to a 6-5 lead against Grand Valley State (18-18 overall, 10-7 GLIAC) through six-and-a-half innings on Friday at Harwell Field, the Wayne State University baseball team (24-13 overall, 13-6 GLIAC) tallied a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) hit a two-run home run in the seventh before
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) did the same the very next inning to make it a 10-5 final. The Warriors and Lakers will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) grounded out to the pitcher and
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) came in from third.
After scoring a run on a wild pitch in the second, Grand Valley State took its first advantage of the day with a solo shot down the right-field line in the third.
In the home half of that frame,
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)) singled in
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Van Sicklen forced in
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) with a sacrifice fly to right center. Those two plays put the home team up for a second time, 3-2, before Hill added some insurance in the fourth with a two-run base knock to right center.
In the top of the fifth, the Lakers didn't go away quietly pushing a pair across with a double over the head of Dale in center field. With his team's lead cut to one, Van Sicklen was at it again in the bottom half thanks to another sacrifice fly to right, this time scoring Paulina.
GVSU made it a one-run affair again in the seventh, which opened the door for Dale and Van Sicklen's fireworks in the seventh and eighth. Dale's blast to the deepest part of the park was his fourth of the season, but first ever at home as a Warrior. Van Sicklen's round-tripper got over the wall in right and was his third of the spring, but first at Harwell like Dale. The sophomore designated hitter has gone deep in three of his last five games after not doing so prior to that this season.
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) improved to 6-2 after seven innings of work. Fitzpatrick gave up five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
In two shutout innings of relief,
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville (Jackson CC)) picked up his second save of the season with only one hit allowed, one free pass and two punchouts.
