Softball Splits GLIAC Twinbill At Saginaw Valley State

After falling 4-1 in the opener, WSU won the nightcap 2-1.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (15-24 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) split a league doubleheader Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University (25-18 overall, 12-8 GLIAC).  SVSU won the opener 4-1, before WSU claimed a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Game 1 Recap
The Warriors struck first in the top of the second as senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a leadoff single to right and was sacrificed to second by freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  She continued to third on a muffed catch.  Following a walk to junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), sophomore Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) delivered an RBI single to left center.

The Cardinals evened the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the third.  Two singles, including an RBI base hit by Alyssa Muench, book-ended a WSU miscue.

SVSU took the lead in the fourth on a one-out solo home run by Maddie Campagna.

Saginaw Valley State extended its advantage to 3-1 in the fifth with back-to-back two-out hits.  After a double by Sara Moos, Olivia Sabin had a sharp single to center plating pinch-runner Natalie Savage.

The game's final run came in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Katelyn Pnacek.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (5-11) allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in six innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

Emily Depew (13-6) limited WSU to one run on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out eight and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Four different WSU batters had singles in the game.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Campagna and Pnacek each went 3-for-3 with a home run.

Game 2 Recap
Both WSU runs came in the top of the first.  Junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a leadoff single and senior Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) followed with a base hit.  Senior Kiley Lewandowski advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) plated Josephson with a ground out, while Favela scored on a single by Miller.

The Cardinals pulled within a run in the second as back-to-back singles following a leadoff walk made it a one-run contest.  A one-out single loaded the bases, but WSU senior hurler Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) did her best Houdini impersonation with a lineout to center and a strikeout to end the threat.

Wayne State had two runners on with one out in the fourth, but consecutive ground outs ended the frame.

SVSU had a golden chance to tie the game in the sixth following a leadoff double by Olivia Sabin.  Bonk retired the next three batters not allowing Sabin to reach third.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (6-10) allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out four and walked one.

Aalana Kimble (6-6) surrendered two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.  She also struck out four and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Favela went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Miller had two hits and an RBI.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Mya Purdy had two singles, while Sabin reached base twice via a double and a walk.
