Softball Splits With Ferris State on Senior Day

WSU recognizes Bonk, Favela, Hodder, Lewandowski and Miller.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (17-28 overall, 9-15 GLIAC) concluded its regular season with a split against visiting Ferris State University (24-23 overall, 21-10 GLIAC) on Senior Day at Gary L. Bryce Field.  FSU won the opener 7-4, while the Warriors won the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.

Game 1 Recap
The Bulldogs scored once in the top of the first on a walk, a stolen base and an RBI single by Alexis Kozlowski.  Ferris State increased its lead to 2-0 the next inning with a leadoff single, a stolen base, and sac bunt and an RBI fielder's choice bunt by Keelin Wheaton.

WSU scored in the bottom of the second on a one-out triple by junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) followed by an RBI single through the left side by freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.).

Wayne State grabbed a 3-2 advantage in the third by scoring a pair of runs.  Sophomore Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single to right, and senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) drew a one-out walk.  With two outs, senior Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) laced a two-run triple down the right field line.

FSU regained the lead with two unearned runs in the fourth on a pair of Warrior miscues.  The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fifth with three runs which included RBI singles by Maddie Gkekas and Abby Meyer.

WSU tallied one run in the sixth as graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) walked with one out, moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI single by Hool.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings.  She struck out one and walked three.  Sophomore Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) tosed the final 2.2 innings allowing one run on two hits and two walks.

Aryn Gallacher (9-5) went the distance for FSU and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits.  She struck out seven and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Maddie Hool had two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Lewandowski drove in a pair.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Brooklyn Verbeek had two hits and scored twice, while Jadyn Joseph drove in two runs.

Game 2 Recap
WSU starter Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) did her best Houdini impersonation in the first inning allowing just one run while walking four batters and throwing 14 strikes in 36 pitches.

After stranding a pair of Bulldogs in the second inning, Bonk only needed six pitches to record three outs in the third, and seven pitches to work around two singles in the fourth.  A line drive double play started by third baseman Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich.) aided Bonk's efforts.

Meanwhile the Warrior offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second by sending 10 batters to the dish.  Back-to-back one-out singles by Hodder and Bonk started the rally, and junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) worked a two-out walk to load the bases.  Miller's high chopped tipped off the pitchers glove and into shallow right field plating WSU's first two runs.  Senior Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) had an RBI single to make it 3-1.  A single by Lewandowski re-loaded the bases prompting an FSU pitching change.  Ruczynski greeted Bulldog reliever Rylie Haist with a two-run single up the middle.

The next inning, Bonk drew a five-pitch walk with one out, and moved to second on a single by Maddie Hool.  With two outs, Miller reached on an infield single coupled with a throwing error by Ferris State made it 6-1.  Favela then had a two-run single into left center.

In the bottom of the fourth, Forman worked a one-out walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count.  Hodder had an infield single and Bonk walked again to load the bases.  A throwing error by FSU on a fielder's choice pushed the Warrior advantage to 9-1.

In the top of the fifth, Bonk walked two of the first three batters, but another free pass was book-ended by a strikeout and a fly out to end the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (7-12) allowed one run on three hits in five innings with two strikeouts to eight walks.

Ashley Webb (6-6) started for FSU and surrendered five earned runs on six hits in 1.2 innings.  She walked one and did not record a strikeout.  Haist allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in 1.1 innings with one strikeout and one walk.  Sophie Wisniski recorded the final three outs for the Bulldogs allowing one unearned run on one hit and two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored, while Miller went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Favela contributed two hits and three RBI, while Lewandowski and Hodder each had two hits.  All nine WSU batters reached base either via a hit or walk.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Ella McDonald reached base twice with a hit and a walk, while Joseph walked three times.

SENIOR DAY
The Wayne State softball program recognized its five graduating seniors - Alexis Bonk, Abby Favela, Becky Hodder, Kiley Lewandowski and Shelby Miller - prior to game one.
