Baseball Splits Pair of Contests at Davenport

The Warriors won 5-2 in the first game but fell 14-12 in a high-scoring second affair.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball squad (25-18 overall, 14-11 GLIAC) split a doubleheader with Davenport (17-27 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Complex.  WSU claimed the first contest 5-2 for its first victory in the series, but could not contain DU's offense in a 14-12 defeat in the second affair.

GAME ONE RECAP
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) went deep for the second game in a row and third time this season, this time with a three-run home run to left center in the top of the first inning.  Tuccinardi touched home after Mason McGuire (Lyon Township, Mich. / Brighton (Mott C.C.)) and Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) to put Wayne State up 3-0 early.

Three frames later, McGuire scored again but on a balk to give the Warriors a four-run advantage.

Davenport scored twice on back-to-back doubles in the sixth, but that would be all the scoring for the home team.  The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh when Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Tuccinardi to come in from third.

Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) improved to 7-2 with his third complete game of the season.  Fitzpatrick surrendered two earned runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO RECAP
Davenport moved ahead 3-0 following the first two innings, but Wayne State eventually grabbed a 4-3 edge following a pair of runs each in the third and fourth frames.  Tuccinardi continued his hot hitting with a triple down the left field line in the third, while Hatzigeorgiou contributed with a run-scoring triple of his own in the following frame.

CJ Maury's (Brampton, Ont. Mayfield SS) RBI single put the Warriors in front briefly, but the Panthers answered with six straight runs (four in the fourth and two in the sixth) to lead 9-3 after the middle innings.  A two-run blast from Ray and a Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) ground ball in the seventh brought WSU to within two (9-7), but the Panthers finished their scoring by plating five in the bottom half of the frame.

Down 14-7, the Warriors tallied each of the contest's final five runs, but that was as close as they would get.  Among the highlights in those final two innings included a run-scoring triple from Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)) and another home run from Tuccinardi to center field - which made it a homer in each game of the doubleheader for the freshman.

Five pitchers saw time on the mound for the Green and Gold.  Starting pitcher Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Canton (Lansing C.C.) pitched into the fourth and allowed seven runs, but only three were earned.  David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) tossed the next two innings, while Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)) pitched the inning after that.  Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) collected two outs, while Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) worked a clean eighth frame.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will look for a series split against the Panthers on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.  It will be the final road game of the regular season for the Green and Gold.
