Baseball Secures Series Split at Davenport

The Warriors racked up 12 runs on 18 hits on Sunday.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (26-18 overall, 15-11 GLIAC) rolled past Davenport (17-28 overall, 12-13 GLIAC) 12-1 on Sunday afternoon to secure the four-game series split.  Next up, the Warriors will conclude their 2024 regular season with a four-game set at home against Purdue Northwest on Friday through Sunday.

Wayne State scored one run in the second inning, four in the fifth, another in the seventh and six in the eighth.  Seven of the eight Warriors that registered a hit had more than one while two of those seven notched three or more.  Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) went 4-for-5 in the two hole with a trio of doubles, three runs scored, one RBI and a walk.  In the cleanup spot, Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) was 3-for-5 with two brought in.

The top three spots in the batting order, Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)), Ray and Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) combined to go 8-for-15 with six runs, seven RBI, one walk and five extra-base hits.  Wrapping up a red-hot week by the freshman Tuccinardi, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with six runs, one double, two triples, three home runs, 10 RBI and 1.685 OPS.  As for Dale, his three-run shot in the eighth was his fourth of the season, and he hit .412 (7-for-17) this week in his own right.

On the mound, Ashton Potts (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson (Kellogg CC)) threw 6.1 innings with one unearned run given up on three hits, eight walks and four strikeouts.  First out of the bullpen with five outs recorded, Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) turned in his fifth straight scoreless appearance, a span that's lasted four frames.

Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville (Kalamazoo Valley CC)) was unable to retire a batter before Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) took care of the final three outs.
