DETROIT -- Trailing Purdue Northwest (17-26 overall, 7-20 GLIAC) 4-2 through six-and-a-half innings, the Wayne State University baseball team (27-18 overall, 16-11 GLIAC) put up a five spot in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and win 7-4. The Warriors and Pride will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Wayne State went up 2-0 in the second thanks to a two-run home run over the green monster in left field by
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) that also scored
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). That blast by Van Sicklen was his fourth of the spring and fifth since becoming a Warrior prior to last season.
Purdue Northwest then took its first lead at 4-2 with one run in the third, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth, setting the scene for the home team's seventh.
With one out, Van Sicklen was hit by a pitch and
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) drew a five-pitch walk.
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) reached on a fielder's choice by the shortstop and moved up on the second baseman's throwing error to first putting runners on second and third for pinch-hitter
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)).
Paulina lined one off the glove of a jumping first baseman allowing Van Sicklen and Maury to come home and the score was tied 4-4. Then,
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) singled to right center and
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) walked to load up the bases for
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)).
McGuire walked on six pitches to give his team the lead and make it 5-4. With the bags still full of Warriors and two outs recorded, Hill reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to force in both Ray and Tuccinardi. That play gave WSU some insurance heading into the final two frames.
On the mound,
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) received a no decision with six innings pitched. Kilander surrendered four runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
In relief,
Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) improved to 2-0 with three shutout frames, only one hit allowed, no free passes and a pair of punchouts. Rosen has yielded no runs in six straight outings (ERA down to 4.15) and nine of his 12 for this season.
