DETROIT -- Saginaw Valley State's (20-7 overall, 9-1 GLIAC) Tyler McLaren threw a complete-game shutout as the Cardinals defeated the Wayne State University baseball team (18-9 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) 8-0 on Friday in the first of a four-game series. WSU and SVSU will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch in game one slated for 1 p.m.
Saginaw Valley State scored its eight runs on seven hits including two runs in the third, one in the sixth, three in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Wayne State accounted for three hits including a pair by
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and another from
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline).
Three of the Cardinals' eight runs came in on wild pitches as the Warriors' trio of pitchers combined to throw six of them.
