Baseball Comes Back From 7-0 Deficit in Nightcap to Split with SVSU

The Warriors scored their 14 game-two runs in a span of four innings.

DETROIT -- After dropping game one 5-1 on Saturday, the Wayne State University baseball team (19-10 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) trailed Saginaw Valley State (21-8 overall, 10-2 GLIAC) 7-0 through four frames of the nightcap.  The Warriors then scored 14 runs in innings five through eight to rally for a 14-9 victory and split the doubleheader.  WSU and SVSU will conclude the four-game set on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Saginaw Valley State scored a run in the first, two in the third, one in the sixth and another in the seventh while holding Wayne State to a lone score on just two hits.

The Warriors scored their run in the fourth when Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) singled right back up the middle to bring in Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)).

On the mound, Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) fell to 5-2 after giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

GAME TWO RECAP
As mentioned above, Saginaw Valley State seemed to be in complete control through four innings leading Wayne State 7-0.  Up to that point, the Warrior offense had accounted for only four hits, but were putting balls in play with just a pair of punchouts.

The home team then rattled off a run in the fifth, six in the sixth, three in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

The dagger came with one out in the seventh as Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) stood at second and Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) was on first following back-to-back walks.  In stepped Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) who proceeded to put his team ahead 10-8 thanks to a three-run home run down the right-field line, his third of the season.

That round-tripper was part of a four-hit day for Ray (4-for-5, 3 R, 5 RBI, 1 BB) who was elevated to the leadoff spot as part of a lineup shakeup.  He was one of four Warriors with a multi-hit game joining McGuire (2-for-4, 1 RBI), CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS; 3-for-5, 2 R) and Blakita (3-for-3, 3 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB).

Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. (Lansing CC)) gave up seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with two free passes.

First out of the bullpen and earning his first victory as a Warrior (1-1 this season) was Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville (Jackson CC)).  Miller surrendered just one earned run on three hits in three innings pitched with two walks and a strikeout.

Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) handled the final two frames for his first career save with one earned run, two hits, no free passes and a pair of punchouts.
