Bats Stay Hot, Baseball Defeats Saginaw 12-8

The Warriors split the four-game series to stay one game back of the Cardinals in the GLIAC standings.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (20-10 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) scored 12 runs on 16 hits, led wire to wire and defeated Saginaw Valley State (21-9 overall, 10-3 GLIAC) 12-8 on Sunday afternoon at Harwell Field.  The Warriors and Cardinals will conclude their regular season series on Tuesday in University Center and first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Wayne State notched four runs in the first inning, one in the third, another in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in both the seventh and eighth.

Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) had another big day at the plate out of the leadoff spot as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.  Ray was one of five Warriors with multiple hits joining Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) at 2-for-4, Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) at 2-for-5, CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) at 2-for-5 and Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) at 2-for-5.

Ray, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.), McGuire and Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) each scored twice.  McGuire (three driven in), Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)) and Hill each drove in multiple runs.

On the bump, Ashton Potts (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson (Kellogg CC)) improved to 3-1 with five innings of three-run ball.  Potts gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

First out of the bullpen, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)) and Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) teamed up to take care of the sixth.

Then, Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) accounted for two-and-two-thirds innings while giving up three earned runs on four hits with two free passes and a punchout.

Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) earned the 27th and final out to shut the door on Saginaw Valley State.
