WSU Athletics Adds Three Sports Medicine Staff Members

Anderson, Gawelek and Lee have joined the department.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Department of Athletics Sports Medicine staff has added three new members in the recent months.  Joining the Warriors are Keegan Gawelek, Autumn Anderson and Lydia Lee.

Gawelek joined the Sports Medicine Staff in April of 2024 as an assistant athletic trainer and is in charge of the baseball as well as the cross country and track & field squads.

Originally from North Ridgeville, Ohio, Gawelek earned a bachelor's degree in Health Science from the University of Cincinnati in May of 2020 and a master's degree in Athletic Training from the University of Toledo in May of 2022.

Prior to becoming a Warrior, Gawelek was an assistant athletic trainer at Cleary University in Howell, Mich. for two years.  Aside from his clinical rotations at Cincinnati and Toledo, he also saw time at Toledo Christian High School and Anthony Wayne High School.

Gawelek is certified to use Blood Flow Restriction and is Mental Health First Aid certified as well.

"Keegan started with our staff in April, and has already built solid rapport with our coaches and student-athletes," stated Erickson.  "Keegan's drive and passion for sports science has already helped our department grow and expand to include new technologies, and I know that his addition to our staff will benefit Warrior Athletics.  Further, his education, experiences, and skill set align well with our department culture, and he has played an important role in some of the facility improvements we made over the summer.  We were (and still are) excited to bring Keegan to Detroit, and we expect big things from him in the seasons to come."

Anderson joined the Wayne State University sports medicine staff in January of 2023 as a graduate assistant and was named an assistant athletic trainer in the summer of 2024.

She graduated Cum Laude from Central Michigan in December of 2020 with a bachelor's degree in athletic training.  While an undergrad, she did clinical rotations with the CMU football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and field hockey teams as well as the Northwood University men's and women's basketball squads.

Since graduation, Anderson has served as an athletic trainer with the Doctors of Physical Therapy in Novi, serving as an athletic Trainer for Detroit area high schools, including Oak Park HS and Voyageur College Prep Academy.

A native of Eastpointe, she is the daughter of Al and Kimberly Anderson.

"We are beyond excited to add Autumn to our full-time staff," remarked Erickson.  "Over the past 18 months, Autumn has become an integral part of our department, providing high quality healthcare services to our Warrior student-athletes as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer, while also working toward her master's degree.  I am confident that she was the right pick for the position and have no doubt that she will transition to the full-time Assistant Athletic Trainer position with ease.  Autumn's demonstrated work ethic and dedication to WSU Athletics, as well as her proficiency and competence as an Athletic Trainer, have already made her an asset to our team, and we look forward to her continued presence among our staff."

Lee came to WSU in July of 2024.  She earned her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Spanish from WSU in 2021, before earning her Master's degree in Athletic Training, also from Wayne State, in 2024.

While in grad school, Lee completed clinical rotations at Troy High School, Birmingham Groves High School, Wayne State (2023 football) and the University of Michigan (2024 women's lacrosse).

The Clarkston, Mich. native is Mental Health First Aid certified and has her Stop the Bleed - Bleeding Control Basic certification.  Lee also began martial arts training in 2005, and has earned her fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo and third degree black belt in Hapkido.

"I am very excited to add Lydia to the WSU Sports Medicine staff," commented Associate Athletic Director/Head Athletic Trainer Lisa Erickson.  "Lydia has served as both a volunteer and Athletic Training student intern within our department over the previous two years, and we feel fortunate to be able to keep her in the Warrior family.  Even more so, her background, education, and clinical experiences make her a great fit, and her passion for the Athletic Training profession will bring a fresh perspective as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics.  I think we all have a responsibility to mentor and support our young professionals, and I am looking forward to seeing how Lydia grows in her career as a healthcare provider, knowing she has the full support of WSU Sports Medicine as well as Henry Ford Health."
