GLIAC -- Freshman
Claudia Portillo of the Wayne State University women's golf program was named GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Week for the first time in her career on Thursday afternoon, as announced by the league.
The rookie's first-time honor comes after she won the inaugural Warrior Invitational on Tuesday at Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Mich. Playing in a field of 51 student-athletes and after leading the field through round one, Portillo carded a two-round score of 148 (+4, 72-76). She's the fifth player to win an event in program history.
Portillo led Wayne State to the Team Championship, the program's first of the year and earliest in a season since Sept. 22-23 of 2018 at Ohio Dominican's Cumberland Trail Classic. In three events so far this season, the native of Spain has tied-for-12th, been the runner-up and finished in first, all while averaging a 74.3 through seven holes played.
Next up on the schedule, the young Warrior and her teammates will play for the fourth Monday-Tuesday in a row to begin the season. Wayne State will participate in Findlay's William Beall Fall Classic on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
