Tough Second Quarter Leads To Setback At Michigan Tech For Women's Hoops

WSU was just 1-of-15 from three-point range in the first half.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (9-7 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) was not able to overcome a tough start and fell 76-67 at Michigan Tech University (7-9 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
In a slow start to the contest, WSU tallied the only four points in the first 3:30 on two Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) free throws and a lay-up by Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North).  After four consecutive points by the Huskies, Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) connected on a jumper just past the mid-point of the opening stanza for a 6-4 Warrior advantage.

Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) ended a mini 3-0 spurt by the hosts with lay-up after grabbing a defensive rebound.  A jumper by McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) with 1:42 remaining was Wayne State's last points of the quarter as Michigan Tech concluded the first period on a 7-0 run for a 14-10 lead after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
After Lexi Boyke (Frankenmuth, Mich.) split a pair from the charity stripe, the teams traded buckets over the next few minutes with both Thompson and Boyke making baskets.  Another Thompson hoop cut the deficit to one (18-17) with 6:20 left before halftime, but MTU responded with nine straight points for a double-digit margin (10, 27-17).  Boyke's hook shot ended the scoreless streak, then she connected from beyond the arc 25 seconds later to put WSU within five (27-22).

The Huskies scored the next eight points before two free throws by Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and a foul shot by Thompson, but Michigan Tech tallied the final four points before intermission for a 39-25 lead at the break.  WSU was just 1-of-15 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes, and was out-scored 24-12 for points in the paint.

Third Quarter
Wayne State scored nine of the first 11 points to start the second half to cut the margin to seven (41-34).  Ferguson ended a 5-0 MTU spurt with a triple.  Just after the mid-point of the stanza, Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]) made a lay-up, Shagena drained her second triple of the season and Ferguson scored the next four points to make it a two-point contest (48-46) with 2:02 left in the period.  Thompson tied the game at 48-48 with a jumper, but the Huskies scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 53-48.

Fourth Quarter
Michigan Tech scored the first three points of the final period to open an eight-point lead (56-48), before two straight buckets by Tripp made it 56-52 with 7:01 left.  A Thompson jumper stopped a 4-0 run by MTU, but the Huskies sandwiched a pair of baskets around a triple by Tripp.  A hook shot by Tripp answered a Huskie hoop, but Michigan Tech's Alyssa Wypych drained a three points with 1:28 remaining to extend the lead to 10 (69-59).  The final minute saw 15 points scored (8 by WSU and 7 by MTU) making the final score 76-67.
