Men's Basketball Drops Road Affair to No. 14 Lake Superior State

Wayne State nearly surmounted a 19-point deficit, but came up short.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) trailed 14th-ranked Lake Superior State (11-2 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) by as many as 19 points on Thursday night inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.  The Warriors then utilized a 27-10 run that lasted nearly 11 minutes and cut the deficit to two, but the Lakers put the game on ice at the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Lake Superior State scored the game's first five points and set the tone right away.  Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) put Wayne State on the board with the first two of his seven points thanks to a jumper at the 17:05 mark.

The Warriors pulled within three again at 8-5 when Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) cashed the first of his three triples.  However, the Lakers proceeded to score 13 of the next 15 total points to stretch their advantage to 14, 21-7, with 12:23 to go until the intermission.

Harris then hit back-to-back two-pointers and shrank the margin back down to 10, 21-11.  The home team's advantage would sit at 10 twice more (23-13, 29-19) before a trey extended it to 12 again at 31-19.  Then Carlos Paul III (Southfield, Mich. / Cornerstone Lincoln-King [Missouri State - West Plains]) jumped into the scoring column with a three-pointer, the beginning of his 11 points, and the visitors were within single-digits (31-22).

Lake Superior State's advantage grew to a first-half high of 15 (39-24) before the halftime score of 39-26.

WSU converted just 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from the field in the first half and was out-shot by LSSU's even 50 percent (13-of-26).  The Lakers also went 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from behind the arc while the Warriors sank three of their 12 looks (25 percent) from long range.

Second Half
Out of the break, Wayne State pulled within 11 twice in the first six minutes (43-32, 49-38).  Nearly three minutes after the second instance, Lake Superior State enjoyed its biggest lead of the night at 19 (60-41), the first of two occasions (63-44).

Then came WSU's 27-10 outburst in which six different scorers contributed for the Green & Gold.  The top three of those six were Tamario Adley with 13 of his game-high 24 points, Harris with five and Paul III with three.  Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day [Macomb CC]), Williams, Jr. and Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) each notched two points to round out the 27.

With only 11 ticks of the clock remaining, Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) fouled LSSU's Devin Womach who made both of his free throw attempts.  Back on the other end, WSU's Adley missed a three-point attempt, Hunter Soper pulled down the defensive rebound and the final buzzer sounded.

TEAM STATS
Lake Superior State shot 48.1 (25-of-52) percent to Wayne State's 45.6 percent (26-of-57).  The Warriors made 12 of their 20 looks (60 percent) at the charity stripe while the Lakers were 15-of-24 (62.5 percent).  Both teams took care of the ball including 17 assists and 10 turnovers for WSU compared to LSSU's 14 dimes and nine giveaways.  All of the major head-to-head scoring categories were decided by four points or less except for fast-break points, 9-2 in favor of the away team.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Three Warriors scored in double-figures including Adley with 24, Harris with 22 and and Paul III with 11.  That effort marked the eighth of Harris' career with 20 or more and first of the season.  Adley also paced the team in both assists with four and steals with three.  Williams, Jr. was on top of the rebounding department with eight while Kelvin Tamakloe (Accra, Ghana / Spring Creek Academy [Blinn College]) stuffed a pair of shot attempts.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Five Lakers scored 10 or more points -- Soper (18), Kingsley Perkins (12), Adam Harakow (12), Tyson Edmondson (11) and Womack (10).
