Defense Down The Stretch Keys Men's Basketball Win At Purdue Northwest

Warriors scored the final seven points for a 73-69 road victory.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (10-9 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) notched its first victory at Purdue Northwest (4-15 overall, 1-10 GLIAC) since 2017 by rallying for a 73-69 triumph on Thursday evening at John Friend Court.

After winning the first ever meeting, which was in Hammond on Dec. 2, 2017 (73-66), the Warriors had lost the last five match-ups at John Friend Court, including the last four by an average of 17.5 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
WSU took an early 3-0 lead on a triple by junior Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) on the Warriors opening possession.  Buckets by junior Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb CC]) and Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) preceded another triple by Harris which pushed the Wayne State advantage to eight (10-2) less than three minutes into the contest.

After a Pride basket, junior Carlos Paul III (Southfield, Mich. / Cornerstone Lincoln-King [Missouri State-West Plains) scored on back-to-back trips down the court for the Warrior giving the guests their largest lead of the game at 14-4.

For the next nearly seven minutes, WSU managed just one free throw, while PNW rattled off a 20-1 stretch to put the hosts in front 24-15, its largest lead of the contest.  A triple by sophomore Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) ended the drought of missed field goals (0-7) and turnovers (three).  Briggs connected again from beyond the arc to pull Wayne State within three (24-21).

Purdue Northwest maintained its advantage until two foul shots by Adley knotted the game at 31-31 with just over four minutes remaining before intermission.  With WSU trailing 33-31, Paul made a hook shot then drained a long-range jumper giving the Warriors a 36-33 lead at halftime.

Most of the key statistical categories were nearly even for the first half - both teams shot 43 percent from the field (WSU 13-of-30, PNW 14-of-32); both teams made five triples; and the turnovers were five for WSU and four for PNW.

Second Half
A triple by Lee, Jr. on the first possession of the second half extended Wayne State's margin to six (39-33).  WSU's lead remained between four and six points until a jumper by Harris and a dunk by senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made it an eight-point game (47-39) with just over 16 minutes left.

A 12-2 spurt by the Pride gave the hosts a 51-49 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining.  PNW extended the lead to seven points (58-51) with a 7-2 run.  A mini run by the Warriors made it a one-point game at 61-60 thanks to a conventional three-point play by Adley.  Following a missed jumper by Purdue Northwest, Harris scored off a feed from junior Kelvin Tamakloe (Accra, Ghana / Spring Creek Academy [Blinn College]).  Lee, Jr. tied the contest at 64-64 with two free throws with just under four minutes remaining.

An Adley jumper knotted the game at 66-66.  The Pride totaled three points on their next two possessions for a 69-66 advantage with 2:07 remaining.  A WSU turnover at the 1:48 mark preceded a Williams, Jr. blocked shot leading to a PNW shot clock violation.

Adley made two free throws trimming the deficit to one (69-68) with 56 seconds left.  Thirty seconds later Lee, Jr. grabbed a loose ball for a steal and Adley went coast-to-coast for the bucket and one putting the Warriors in front 71-69.  A Purdue Northwest triple try was off the mark and Adley was fouled with 4.4 seconds left after grabbing the rebound.  He made both shots from the charity stripe to seal the road win for Wayne State.

With Adley tallying the game's final seven points and making 4-of-4 from the foul line he improved his game total to 12-of-12, and in the process became the first Wayne State men's basketball player in at least 23 years to shoot 100 percent from the foul line and make more than 10 free throws.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 44 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, while PNW was 27-of-58 (47 percent).  WSU made 8-of-17 from three-point range (47 percent) compared to the Pride's 8-of-26 (31 percent).  The Warriors connected on 19-of-22 foul shots (86 percent), with Purdue Northwest making 7-of-10 (70 percent).  Wayne State had a slim 32-31 edge in rebounds, while committing 10 turnovers to PNW's nine miscues.
