Women's Hoops Falls 70-64 in Close Battle with Parkside

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (7-6 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) fell to the University of Wisconsin Parkside (9-3 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) 70-64 in the team's first home game of the new year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) knocked down a jumper to begin the game, followed by an Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) triple to give the Warriors an early 5-0 lead.  Cassidy Arni put Parkside on the board with a lay-up.  Just under two minutes later, Thompson saw another shot go through, along with three Warrior free throws to push the advantage to eight (10-2).  Six straight points for the Rangers brought them within two, but four points from McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) put the Green and Gold ahead 14-8 before a Lillie Petersen buzzer beater to make it 14-10 after the first 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER
Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) hit a jumper to open the second period, but six points from UWP tied the contest at 16 apiece.  Thompson broke the tie with a pair of free throws. Wayne State and Parkside both scored on their next possessions to keep it a two point game with WSU leading 20-18.  Parkside's Kendal Zeiter connected on a lay-in to even the score once more.  Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) made her second basket of the night, before Zeiter put another shot through the net to tie the game again.  The game's back-and-forth theme continued, with the Rangers splashing another shot as time expired with Wayne State holding onto a one-point lead entering the half.

THIRD QUARTER
WSU scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half (40-31).  Coming out of a timeout, UWP's Jaelyn Derlein splashed a long-range jumper, cutting the Wayne State lead to six, before Ferguson made two more free throws.  On the ensuing possession, Kaalyn Petersen connected on a lay-up, to bring Parkside within six again (42-36).  The two squads exchanged blows for the remainder of the stanza, with the Green and Gold ahead 53-47 with one period remaining.

FOURTH QUARTER
Both squads started the final quarter slow, with only three points being scored in just under four minutes, with each point coming from the charity stripe.  The first points from the floor came at the 6:07 mark, when Chloe Van Zeeland found the bottom of the net after she grabbed her own miss.  On her shot, she was able to draw contact, putting her at the line for an old fashioned three-point play.  She connected on her free throw, shortening Wayne State's advantage to just two (54-52). Lexi Boyke (Frankenmuth, Mich.) made two free throws to extend the Wayne State lead, before Van Zeeland matched with two more points of her own.  After the Rangers made a lay-up to tie the game again (56-56), Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) connected on her first triple of the game to put the warriors ahead 59-56 with four minutes to play.  Back-to-back Parkside three-point shots gave the team its first advantage of the night (62-59).  The Warriors were unable to regain the lead, falling 70-64.

TEAM STATS
Parkside was better from the floor, shooting 41 percent (25-of-62) to WSU's 35 percent (23-of-65).  It was a similar story from beyond the arc, with the Rangers connecting on 39 percent of their triples (7-of-18) and the Warriors only making three of their 15 attempts (20 percent).  UWP won the rebounding battle by just one, as they nabbed 42 to Wayne State's 41.  The Parkside bench contributed 32 points, compared to just 11 from their WSU counterparts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
McKenna Ferguson (17), Shea Tripp (15), and Taylor Thompson (13) all scored double-digit points, with Tripp grabbing a career-best 17 boards.  Tripp and Alyssa Leister both dished out four assists, while Thompson caused four turnovers.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Jaelyn Derlein scored a team-high 14 points off the bench.  Sheridan Flauger led Parkside in both rebounds (eight), and assists with four.  Chloe Van Zeeland stole the ball three times, and added nine points.
