Football Blanked At Top-Ranked Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (0-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) fell 59-0 at top-ranked Ferris State University (6-0 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  It was WSU's first time being shutout in 130 games since a 7-0 blanking at Ashland on Sept. 8, 2012.  FSU won its 20th straight game as the Bulldog defense posted a shutout for the third consecutive contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU took the opening kickoff and garnered one first down before having to punt.  The Bulldogs moved inside the Warrior 25 yard line but a fumble was recovered by sophomore linebacker Spencer Lyons (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Western Michigan]) to halt the FSU drive.

Following a three-and-out by the Wayne State offense, Ferris State went 76 yards in four plays in just 85 seconds for the first score of the game as quarterback Wyatt Bower scored on a 34-yard scamper.

Sophomore Carson Creehan (Madison, Ala. / Madison Academy [Coffeyville C.C.]) took over for WSU but his third down pass was intercepted.  FSU extended its advantage on a four-yard run by Bower capping off a six-play, 34-yard drive in 3:24.

Punter Dove Eitzen (Blissfield, Mich. [Albany]) punted for the third time of the period.

Second Quarter
The Bulldogs drive carried into the second stanza with Jeremiah Lee hauling in a six-yard scoring toss from Bower on the second play of the period.

After another Eitzen punt, Ferris State added to its score with a 63-yard touchdown drive in five plays concluding with a 25-yard touchdown run by Zak Ahern.

Junior Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork, Utah [El Camino C.C.]) rushed for 10 yards on a second-and-five for another WSU first down, then on third down completed a 25-yard pass to senior Justyz Tuggle (Redford, Mich. / Detroit Central [Bethune-Cookman]).  On fourth down, sophomore Griffin Nowak (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) missed wide left on a 42-yard field goal attempt.

FSU increased its margin on the ensuing drive as Chase Carter went 33 yards on a keeper wrapping up a four-play, 75-yard drive in 2:23.

The final score of the opening 30 minutes came with just 19 seconds remaining as Cam Underwood hauled in a seven-yard pass from Carter.

Ferris State had a 382 to 58 advantage in total offense in the first half with FSU running 34 plays to WSU's 29 snaps.

Third Quarter
FSU took the second half kickoff and drove 78 yards in 10 plays with Carter scoring on a five-yard keeper.

The Bulldogs made it 56-0 as Jake Price scored the game's final touchdown on a 16-yard carry with 4:54 remaining in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter
The lone scoring play in the final stanza was a 32-yard field goal by Eddie Jewett.
