Football Drops 49-14 Contest To Davenport

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (0-7 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) dropped a 49-14 decision at home to Davenport University (3-3 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After the Warriors were stopped on fourth-and-one near midfield, the Panthers drove 44 yards in seven plays to take a 7-0 lead on a nine-yard touchdown run by Cephus Harris.

DU extended its lead to 14-0 following a WSU punt.  Davenport cover 80 yards in four plays with the final two passes covering 75 yards.  D'Wan Mathis completed a 40-yard pass to Keonta Nixon, and Dom Grguric hauled in a 350yard touchdown pass on the ensuing play.

Wayne State crossed midfield but back-up signal caller Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / Akron East) was intercepted on third-and-seven.

Second Quarter
The Panthers ensuing drive continued into the second period with Harris scoring on a one-yard plunge with 11:38 remaining before intermission.  The TD run capped off an 11-play, 65-yard drive in 6:01.

Following another Warrior punt, DU increased its advantage to 28-0 on a one-yard run by Harris with 4:31 remaining before halftime.

After a WSU punt, Warrior freshman linebacker Luke Johnson (Oxford, Mich.) intercepted a Mathis pass on third-and-10 and returned it 67 yards for his first collegiate touchdown and Wayne State's second pick six of the season.

Davenport led in total offense through 30 minutes 320-56, and ran 45 plays to WSU's 20.

Third Quarter
The Panthers took the second half kickoff and went 72 yards in four plays in just 76 seconds with Nixon notching a 50-yard touchdown reception.

WSU had a 51-yard drive on the next possession but a 41-yard field goal attempt missed the mark.

DU had an 11-play drive, which covered 76 yards with Harris tallying his fourth rushing touchdown of the game.  Davenport converted both a third-and-nine and a third-and-six on the drive.

Both teams failed to garner a first down on their next drives.

Fourth Quarter
A Wayne State drive that carried over into the fourth stanza, concluded with XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) scored his first rushing touchdown of the season on a one-yard keeper.  The big play of the drive was a 28-yard reception by freshman wide receiver Drew Hickmott (Ortonville, Mich. / Ortonville Brandon) on the first play of the drive.

The Panthers completed the scoring with a 10-play, 80-yard drive as Jeremiah Sterling scored on a four-yard carry.

TEAM STATS
Davenport out-gained the Warriors 544-175, including a 214-37 edge on the ground.  DU was 11-of-15 on third down, compared to Wayne State's 1-of-10.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tyus rushed for a team-best 42 yards and one score.  Cox completed 11-of-25 passes for 138 yards with two interceptions.  Hickmott led WSU in both receptions (4) and receiving yards (62).  Senior linebacker Martell Williams (Hillside, Ill. / Proviso West) tallied a game-high 10 tackles (5-5), including 1.5 for loss.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Harris rushed for a game-high 133 yards on 20 carries with four touchdowns.  Mathis passed for 285 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-25 with one interception.  George Sims caught a game-best five passes, Nixon totaled a game-high 90 receiving  yards.  Xavier Marquez led DU with five tackles (1-4), plus a pass break-up.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Saginaw Valley State next Saturday (Nov. 25) for a 2p.m. kickoff against the Cardinals.  SVSU has won three straight to improve to 4-3 overall after winning 20-19 at Grand Valley State earlier today.
