Women's Basketball Falls 70-58 At Northwood

Ferguson leads four Warriors in double figures with 16 points; Lutchka notches double-double.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-3 overall) dropped a 70-58 in-region non-conference contest at Northwood University (4-1 overall) Tuesday afternoon at Riepma Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The hosts led 2-0 and 4-2, before junior guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) connected from three-point range for a 5-4 advantage.  NU's Lexie Bowers made her second field goal of the early going for a 6-5 Timberwolves lead, which started a 7-0 run for Northwood.

A free throw by sophomore guard Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start) ended the spurt, and senior forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) grabbed an offensive rebound and was rewarded moments later with bucket.  Five consecutive points by NU's Karie Keefer, her only points of the game, extended the Timberwolves lead to 18-8 with 2:19 remaining in the opening stanza.

After a Lutchka lay-up, Northwood's Ella Miller drained a triple before NU's Lea Holmes tallied two of her team-high 17 points.  Senior guard Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]) connected from beyond the arc to cut the Warrior deficit to 21-13 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
The Timberwolves led by 10 (25-15) after a jumper by Grace Isenhath, but back-to-back lay-ups from Lutchka and Tubergen, along with a completion of a conventional three-point play by Tubergen pulled WSU within five (25-20) at the 6:46 mark.  Ferguson responded to Northwood bucket with a pair of free throws, before junior guard Emily Homan (Haslett, Mich.) scored to make it a three-point contest (27-24) at the mid-point of the period.

Junior guard Annabelle Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) knotted the game at 27-27 with a long range shot, and WSU took its first lead since early in the game as Homan's jumper was good.  Neither team scored until the waning seconds when WSU's inbounds pass was caught out of bounds at mid-court with 0.8 seconds remaining.  NU's Savannah Fellenbaum banked in a deep three pointer as the clock expired ending an 0-for-13 drought from the floor for the Timberwolves and giving the hosts a 30-29 lead at halftime.

Third Quarter
After Wayne State took its final lead at 31-30 on a lay-up by graduate student Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]), Northwood would tally the next seven points before a jumper by Gordon.

WSU's deficit was 10 (43-33) after triple by Bowers with just under six minutes remaining.  Ferguson notched the next six points of the game on an old-fashioned three-point play and a field goal from downtown.

NU's Maeve St. John scored five straight points, before the Warriors made a late run to pull within six (51-45) on a Gordon lay-up as the third period concluded.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State registered the first five points of the fourth period to make it a one-point game (51-50) after a lay-up by senior forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and a triple by Ferguson. Northwood's Maelyn McNealy connected from beyond the arc to start a stretch of three consecutive triples on three straight possessions by the hosts.

WSU went scoreless for over three minutes, while the Timberwolves built up a 64-50 advantage.  Two free throws by Ferguson was not enough as NU extended its margin to 15 (67-52) with just over 2:30 left.

The Warriors would not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 37 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, including just 5-of-23 (22 percent) from three-point range.  Meanwhile, Northwood connected on 39 percent (28-of-72) of its field goal tries, and were 10-of-29 (35 percent) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were 9-of-12 (75 percent) at the charity stripe, with the Timberwolves making four of their six foul shots (67 percent).  Northwood had a slight 42-41 edge in rebounding, but turned 17 WSU turnovers into a 24-9 advantage in points off turnovers.  NU also led 36-28 for points in the paint.
