DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's hoops squad (6-3 overall) downed Tiffin University (4-4 overall) 78-66 on the road for its third-consecutive win of the season.
The victory marks
Carrie Lohr's 400th-career win as a collegiate head coach across her time at Wayne State and St. Clair County Community College (SC4).
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) opened the scoring just four seconds into the game on the contest's first possession. A
McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) steal and assist to
Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Lincoln Park [Central Michigan]) made it 4-0. Ferguson knocked down a triple while being fouled and connected on the free throw for a four-point play. Thompson notched another lay-in to push the Warrior advantage to 10-0, before TU's Isabelle Niederst put the dragons on the board (10-2). Back-to-back triples from Ferguson and
Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) prompted a Tiffin timeout.
Coming out of the stoppage, Megan Campbell (TU) drove to the hoop for a lay-in to slim the Dragon deficit to 12 (16-4), before senior forward
Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) splashed a long-range jumper to push the margin to 15 points.
The Green and Gold wrapped the opening frame with an 8-5 scoring spurt, leading 27-9 after the first 10 minutes of action.
SECOND QUARTER
After an offensive barrage in the opening quarter, the scoring slowed in the second with three points (two for the Dragons and one for the Warriors) in the first 3:56 of the stanza. TU tallied five consecutive points to cut WSU's lead back to 12 (28-16), before a pair of Thompson free throws widened the gap to 14 points.
Hailey Unger (TU) responded with a triple, but seven-straight points for Wayne State made it 37-19 in favor of the guests after the first two quarters.
Neither team found a groove offensively in the second stanza, with the Warriors shooting 25 percent (3-of-12) from the floor, compared to Tiffin's 27 percent (4-of-15).
Ferguson (14 points) and Thompson (13 points) led the offensive charge for WSU in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
The Dragons began the third period with a 12-6 run, cutting the Green and Gold's advantage to 12 points (43-31). A Thompson bucket and Ayrault triple, followed by four points for TU made it 48-35.
Baskets From
Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. Schoolcraft [Lakeland University]) and Thompson, along with a Dragon free throw closed the third period with Wayne State ahead 52-36.
The hosts out-paced WSU 17-15 in the third stanza.
FOURTH QUARTER
The final frame started with a Lutchka lay-in followed by back-to-back buckets for Tiffin. After
Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. Hudsonville [Bowling Green]) connected on an attempt at the free throw line, TU's Magee knocked down a triple, before five-straight Warrior points advanced the score to 60-43.
Despite a surge for the dragons that brought the hosts as close as seven points twice (70-63 and 71-64), the Warriors prevailed 78-66, with their last 10 points coming from the charity stripe.
TEAM STATISTICS
The Green and Gold made 44 percent of its attempts from the field (26-of-59), while Tiffin connected on 24-of-71 tries from the floor (34 percent). Of TU's 71 attempts, 33 were from beyond the arc, with seven going through the hoop. WSU made 6-of-14 from deep. At the foul line, Wayne State was 20-of-32 (63 percent), with the Dragons going 11-of-15 (73 percent). WSU won the battle of the boards with 49 rebounds compared to Tiffin's 38.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
A trio of Warriors reached double-digit points. Those three were
Taylor Thompson with a game-high 26 points,
McKenna Ferguson with 17, and
Gabi Lutchka with 14. Thompson added a game-best 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the campaign. Ferguson and Lutchka each nabbed eight rebounds as well. Thompson led the team in assists (five) and blocks (three).Â
Karrington Gordon and
Annabel Ayrault both contributed eight points.
LEADING THE DRAGONS
Megan Campbell (15), Peyton Magee (14), Isabelle Neiderst (12), and Myka Richardson (11) all eclipsed double-figure scoring. Richardson had seven boards, six steals, and three swats, while Campbell had five helpers.
