Softball Opens Season With Two Wins At Lincoln Memorial Tournament

DeWitt drives in 10 in three-game series.

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (2-1 overall) began its 2025 campaign with a weather-shortened three-game trip to the Lincoln Memorial Invitational.  WSU won its first game, 7-0, over Kentucky Wesleyan (0-7 overall), before falling 8-7 in nine innings to No. 28-ranked LMU (8-3 overall).  The Warriors trounced Davis & Elkins (3-9 overall) 11-6 in the final game of the tournament.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors snapped a scoreless deadlock with a three-run bottom of the third inning.  Sophomore Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) reached on a leadoff strikeout via a passed ball.  After a fly out and another passed ball, senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had an infield single.  Following a force out at third base, sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) had an RBI single to center field plating Josephson on a 3-2 offering.  Freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) ripped a 1-0 pitch to right center for a two-run double.

Wayne State extended its lead to 4-0 the following frame as senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) reached on a one-out error.  With two outs, junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had an RBI double to right center scoring her sister Mia.

WSU added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth as Forman had a one-out single and scored when DeWitt's laser to center field was misplayed.  With two outs, sophomore Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) blooped a 1-2 pitch down the right field line scoring DeWitt.

The Warriors final run was scored in the sixth as pinch-hitter Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) reached on a four-pitch walk.  Pinch-hitter Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) had an RBI double to left center plating Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) with the game's final run.

Wayne State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Josephson had a leadoff double, went to third on a sac bunt by Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) and scored on an RBI double by DeWitt.  With two outs, Koopman had an RBI single through the right side.
