Softball Splits On Day 1 Of Lewis Dome Invitational

Warriors defeat Bemidji State (14-2) before falling to St. Cloud State (5-2).

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-2 overall) split its two games on Friday at the Lewis Dome Invitational.  WSU defeated Bemidji State (2-5 overall) 14-2 in five innings, before falling 5-2 to St. Cloud State (10-3 overall) in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors wasted no time against the Beavers scoring twice just nine pitches into the contest.  Senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) led off with a single and advanced to third when freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) was safe on a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) hit a laser into left field that skipped past the BSU outfielder allowing both Josephson and Williams to score.

Forman again provided the offense the next inning with a three-run blast down the left field line following a single by junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and a four-pitch walk to Josephson.

Wayne State extended its lead in the third as freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) and senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond,Mich./ Armada) had back-to-back one-out singles.  After a force out at third, Josephson had an infield single to load the bases.  Williams was plunked on the first pitch plating Ruczynski.

The Beavers scored a run in the third on a single, a hit by pitch, and an RBI single by Calleigh Richards.

Freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth following a single by freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked a full count walk, then scored on a triple to left center by Near, who scored on Ruczynski's RBI ground out.

WSU concluded its scoring with a four-run top of the fifth.  Senior Lauren Fritz (Commerce, Mich. Waterford Kettering [Oakland CC]) had a leadoff pinch-hit triple and scored on Forman's sacrifice fly.  After a pinch-hit single by senior Madison Martinez (Hemlock, Mich. [Central Michigan]), Koopman connected for her second two-run shot of the game.  Junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) singled and Near walked before Ruczysnki plated Wayne State's last run with a single.

Bemidji State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth making the final score 14-2.

WSU Notes
Koopman's two homer game was the first by a Warrior since Becky Hodder accomplished the feat at Parkside on April 2, 2023.  The 14 runs in a game were the most since WSU tallied a 14-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire on March 17, 2018.  Forman's five RBI effort was the most in a contest since Brooke Nadolny totaled six RBI at Ashland on April 30, 2021.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (1-0) hurled the first three innings allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts to one walk.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) made her first appearance since April 28, 2023 (missed all of last season with an injury) striking out five of the 10 batters she faced.  Batton allowed an unearned run on three hits in her two innings of work.

Elle Hastings (0-1) recorded four hits, while surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks.  Keira Lucero allowed four earned runs on five hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.  Payton Prissel tossed the final two frames allowing five earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout to one walk.

WSU increased its advantage to 2-0 in the sixth as DeWitt had a leadoff triple and crossed home on a RBI ground out by Ruczynski.

The first four batters for the Huskies in the bottom of the sixth reached on a home run (by Brooke Holmes), a single, a walk and an RBI double by Sydney Roe.  The go-ahead run scored on a Warrior throwing error, while back-to-back sacrifice flies scored the final two runs.
