Women's Hoops Falls 66-62 at Roosevelt

Poor outside shooting (1-of-13) leads to road setback.

CHICAGO -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (15-9 overall, 10-6 GLIAC) suffered a 66-62 setback at Roosevelt University (10-12 overall, 8-8 GLIAC) Monday night.  With the loss, the Warriors drop to fifth in the GLIAC standings, one game behind Parkside and Ferris State for the final two home court berths.  Grand Valley State (15-1 GLIAC) and Northern Michigan (12-4 GLIAC) are the top two squads in the league standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Despite leading by two (2-0, 4-2) early on, WSU fell behind 5-4 before scoring the next 10 points led by five points from Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center), three by McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) and two by Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.), who tallied four of Wayne State's first six points.  Leading 14-5 at the mid-point of the opening stanza, the Warriors led by 13 (20-7) after a pair of foul shots by Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. / [Lakeland University]).  However, WSU was unable to score in the final three minutes of the period, but the host Lakers rallied scoring 11 straight points to pull within two (20-18) after 10 minutes.  Four turnovers and three missed shots contributed to the scoring drought.

Second Quarter
A triple by RU's Jalyssa Carrasco on the opening possession of the second period put Roosevelt in front 21-20.  Wayne State regained the lead on two Tripp free throws which ignited a 14-0 Warrior spurt to lead by 13 (34-21) with 5:40 remaining until intermission.  Tripp tallied nine of those WSU points during the run.  As was the case in the opening quarter, Roosevelt ended the second stanza on a 8-2 run to cut its deficit to seven (36-29) at halftime.  Tripp had 20 points in the opening 20 minutes and was +21.

Third Quarter
Wayne State's margin was nine (38-29) after a Tripp lay-up, however the Lakers tallied the next seven points before an old-fashioned three-point play by Miller.  A jumper at the buzzer by RU's Jayla Turchin capped off a 12-6 spurt by the hosts to grab a 48-47 lead heading into the fourth period.

Fourth Quarter
Roosevelt led by five on three occasions (52-47, 54-49 and 56-51) before Laker Luka Malinka made a four-point play (triple and free throw) to extend their lead to nine (60-51) with just over six minutes remaining.  Three points from Tripp along with baskets by Thompson and Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) made it a two-point game (60-58) with 3:43 left.  An offensive rebound and put back by Tripp knotted the score at 60-60 but Malinka scored 16 seconds later to re-take the lead for the hosts.

A jumper by Ferguson tied the contest at 62-62 with 98 seconds left, but two missed shots and turnover in their final three possessions by the Warriors allowed the Lakers to score the game's final four points for the 66-62 win.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the floor, with RU making 40 percent (23-of-58).  WSU was just 1-of-13 (8 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Lakers connected on 5-of-23 (22 percent) triple tries.  The Warriors converted only 9-of-13 free throws (69 percent), with Roosevelt taking nine more attempts (22) and making six more (15) for 68 percent.
