Harris and Briggs combine for 35 points.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (13-12 overall, 9-8 GLIAC) continued its Thursday magic this evening holding on for a 67-66 triumph at Grand Valley State University (13-12 overall, 9-8 GLIAC).  The Warriors, who have won three times in their last five trips to Allendale, are 9-1 this season on Thursday's including an 8-1 conference mark.  WSU has won seven straight Thursday contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The host Lakers led for just 1:42 in the opening half and most of that was 2-0 from 19:12 until 17:38 when junior Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) grabbed an offensive rebound and drained a triple.  A lay-up by sophomore Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) made it 5-2.  Following four straight points by GVSU, a Briggs jumper regained the lead just eight seconds after Grand Valley had scored.  Three consecutive points by senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) pushed the lead to four (10-6).

Junior Carlos Paul III (Southfield, Mich. / Cornerstone Lincoln-King [Missouri State - West Plains) answered a Laker bucket with one of his own.  Briggs tallied four straight points for 16-10 lead at the mid-point of the stanza.  Back-to-back hoops by junior Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb C.C.]) and a jumper by sophomore Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) extended the margin to nine (22-13).  After seven straight points by Grand Valley State to cut its deficit to two (22-20), Harris connected on a long-range jumper.

Another Harris jumper made the lead seven (27-20), and after a Laker bucket, Harris nailed consecutive shots from beyond the arc giving him 14 points in the first half and WSU a 33-22 advantage at intermission.  Harris was 4-for-8 from three-point land in the opening 20 minutes, while the rest of the Warriors were 0-for-7.  WSU had five turnovers to 10 GVSU miscues, while led to a 9-5 margin for WSU in points off turnovers.

Second Half
Grand Valley State started the second half with four straight points before a step-back jumper by Harris.  GVSU's Jalen Charity and Charles Turner followed with triples to trim the Wayne State lead to three (35-32).  Lee, Jr. Adley, Williams, Jr. and junior Kelvin Tamakloe (Accra, Ghana / Spring Creek Academy [Blinn College]) were part of an 8-0 run giving WSU an 11-point margin (43-32) with nearly seven minutes gone in the second half.

Following six straight points by the Lakers, Paul III connected from long distance and then a jumper pushing the lead to 10 (48-38) with just over 10:30 remaining.  The Warrior advantage was 12 (52-40) with just under eight minutes left following a fast break lay-up by Briggs.  When Adley made two foul shots with 5:02 remaining Wayne State had a 14 point advantage (56-42).

The Lakers tallied the next eight points, before Briggs drained a triple to make it a nine-point contest (59-50) with 2:21 left.  Briggs made both ends of a one-and-one with 53 seconds left for a nine-point margin (61-52).  However, GVSU's Mason Docks converted an old-fashioned three-point play just seven seconds later, before Harris connected on two free throws in a one-and-one situation with 41 ticks on the clock.

An offensive rebound and put-back by S Thompson made it a six-point game (63-57) with 31 seconds remaining.  Two foul shots by Lee, Jr. after only three seconds went off the clock increased the Warrior lead to eight (65-57).  Kaden Brown connected on a triple with 12 seconds left cutting the WSU margin to five (65-60).  After turnovers by each team without the clock starting, Lee, Jr. made two foul shots in a double bonus situation extending the lead to seven (67-60).  Brown again drained a three-pointer pulling the hosts within four (67-63) with four seconds left.

Another five second call on WSU, preceded Brown's third triple in the final 12 seconds but it was not enough as Wayne State held on a for a 67-66 road victory.
