Softball Drops A Pair on Final Day Of Lewis Dome Invitational

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-4 overall) lost both games on Saturday at the Lewis Dome Invitational.  The host Flyers (7-7 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 win over the Warriors, while Minnesota Duluth (10-4 overall) had a 3-2 advantage midway through before scoring 13 times against the WSU bullpen for a 16-6 victory over the Warriors.

GAME ONE RECAP
The first four innings were dominated by pitching and defense as both WSU hurler Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and LU thrower Allie Wondrasek (3-2) matched zero-for-zero.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lewis had a leadoff single and with one out, Nicole Magdziasz beat out a chopper to third.  After a walk to load the bases, Ariana Trausch was hit by a 1-2 offering from Long forcing in the game's first run.

WSU evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with a one-out solo home run by Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.).

In the top of the seventh, Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) had a leadoff single and moved to third when Long reached on a sacrifice bunt with a throwing error.  O'Donnell was able to score the go-ahead run with a highlight reel slide at home to beat the throw on Hunter Near's (Coopersville, Mich.) sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the frame, Magdziasz had a leadoff single and went to second on a bunt single by Kristen Graham.  After a foul out and a line out, Erica Hoffman's single to left plated Magdziasz with the tying run.  On a 1-1 pitch, a hard hit ball by Katie Jensen was not fielded allowing the winning run to score.

Minnesota Duluth grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the top of the fourth on two walks preceding a three-run home run by S Timmer.

Wayne State pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a leadoff single, and Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) was hit by a pitch with one out.  Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) singled to load the bases.  Mia Hool's (Allen Park, Mich.) fielder's choice plated DeWitt.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth on three singles and a walk against WSU starter Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) and an RBI ground out vs. Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon).

Neither team had a base runner in the sixth before UMD exploded for 11 runs on seven hits, four walks and three hit by pitches.
