Women's Basketball Notches Road Win At Davenport

Three Warriors score in double figures.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (16-10 overall, 11-7 GLIAC) ended its mini two-game losing streak with a 76-49 triumph at Davenport University (6-20 overall, 4-14 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The contest was tied twice early on (2-2, 4-4) before the Warriors tallied the next four points.  DU responded with five consecutive points for a 9-8 lead with 4:10 left in the opening period.  Over the final 250 seconds of the stanza, Wayne State held a 12-3 scoring advantage.  WSU took the lead for good on a long-range shot by senior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) with 3:46 left and never looked back.

Second Quarter
After a Panther foul shot made it 20-13, Wayne State recorded the next seven points, including five by senior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center), to grab a 27-13 lead.  Senior Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) answered a Davenport triple with a bucket to ignite a 9-2 spurt by the Warriors for a 36-18 advantage.  Sophomore Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) tallied five points during the run, including a triple.  Freshman Koko Sylvester (Toledo, Ohio / Start) made a pair of free throws giving WSU 38 first half points.

Third Quarter
Wayne State's starters scored the first 16 points after intermission led by Leister with seven, and sophomore McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) with a pair of triples for six points.

DU's Nevaeh Williams connected from long distance with 5:47 remaining in the period to end the scoreless drought.  Over the last 5:20, Davenport had a 14-13 scoring edge, but the Warriors led 67-38 after 30 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
WSU's margin was between 28 and 31 points until the final 90 seconds of the game when Williams and Laynie Meredith hit back-to-back treys for the Panthers.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 41 percent (28-of-68) from the floor compared to DU's 28 percent (15-of-53).  WSU was 5-of-16 (31 percent) from three-point range, while the Panthers connected on 5-of-22 triple tries (23 percent).  The Warriors were a solid 79 percent (15-of-19) at the charity stripe, with Davenport making 14 of its 26 foul shot attempts (54 percent).  Wayne State had a 48-36 edge in rebounding, along with a 42-14 advantage for points in the paint.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Shea Tripp totaled a team-high 16 points with nine rebounds, which tied Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) for team-best honors.  Alyssa Leister contributed 14 points, while McKenna Ferguson finished with 10 points.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Isabel Lindo, Nevaeh Williams and Ellie Toney tied for team-high scoring honors with eight points apiece.  Lillee Gustafson grabbed a team-best nine boards.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the regular season with a pair of home games.  WSU entertains Ferris State for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Thursday (Feb. 27), followed by a Senior Day match-up against Lake Superior State at 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 1).
