Softball Falls Twice At Findlay

Oilers win 11-6 and 2-1.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-6 overall) played its final two games before heading to Florida for spring break.  The date and location were changed from the original schedule (March 2 at Wayne State) to (February 28 at Findlay High School) to accommodate impending weather.  The University of Findlay (7-1 overall) prevailed 11-6 and 2-1 in the non-conference in-region doubleheader.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors raced out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings.  Senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) led off the contest with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College].  With one out, freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) smashed a two-run home run to center field, her second of the season.

WSU hit back-to-back home runs leading off the second by freshman Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) and senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).  It was Near's first career home run and fifth for Ruczynski.

The Oilers scored three times in the bottom of the fourth on four hits to pull within one at 4-3.

Wayne State responded with two runs in the top of the fifth as freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a one-out single and scored on Near's two-out two-run blast to center field.

UF again cut its deficit to one (6-5) with a two-run home run by Joslynne Frazier in the bottom of the fifth.

Findlay scored the final six runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on four hits and two walks.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked five-plus innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.  Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) retired one batter, while surrendering five earned runs on three hits and two walks.  Junior Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) retired both batters she faced.

Alexys Antal tossed 5.1 innings for UF and allowed six earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout to four walks.  Kayla Dykin (1-0) earned the win in relief by blanking WSU for the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hunter Near hit two home runs and drove in three, while Rylie Josephson had two hits.  Danielle Fick, Katelyn DeWitt and Mady Ruczynski each reached base twice via a hit and a walk, while Elly Koopman walked twice and had a single.

LEADING THE OILERS
Annika Bredel had two hits and two runs scored, while Joslynne Frazier had two hits and drove in four.  Kora Navarro totaled three hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State freshman Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) snapped a scoreless draw with a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth for WSU's lone run.

Findlay evened the score in the bottom of the frame on a couple of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt.

UF scored the game-winning run as Annika Bredel led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to center field.

IN THE CIRCLE
Grace Fisher allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings with two strikeouts and just one walk.

Kayla Dykin pitched the first three innings for UF, holding WSU scoreless on one hit with one strikeout.  Emma Jones (3-1) earned the win in relief despite allowing one run on two hits over the final four innings.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Rylie Josephson had two hits, with WSU's other hit being Barnes home run.

LEADING THE OILERS
Annika Bredel hit a solo home and Jillian Baracz had a pinch-hit RBI single.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play 12 games in eight days in Florida (March 8-15) starting with games on March 8 vs. Ohio Dominican (9 AM) and Wayne State College (11:30 AM).
